La Cañada girls’ volleyball team lost on Saturday in the second round of the CIF State Division II Championships to Redlands East Valley in straight games for the second year in a row, 22-25, 12-25, 12-25. Last week, the Spartans (26-8) lost a close match to Elsinore in the CIF Southern Section Division II-A finals. “We started strong, serving well, passing well and siding out,” said La Cañada Head Coach Brock Turner of the loss to Redlands. “Then, in games 2 and 3, the passing and play wasn’t consistent and we stopped siding out, which gave them too many good swings at balls during their transition phase of the game.

The victory was Elsinore’s first ever girls’ volleyball championship and only third championship in any sport — and the school has been open since 1891. “We were fired up,” said Tigers senior Michelle Waber. “We’ve got nine seniors on this team, we’ve been looking forward to this our whole high school careers.

Courtney McCutchan and the La Cañada High girls’ volleyball team had high hopes and big dreams for 2008 — and those dreams were realized. The Spartans won their first CIF Southern Section Division II-A championship in 32 years. The Spartans were a perfect 10-0 in Rio Hondo League play, never even dropping a game. They ended up losing to Redlands East Valley in the second round of state competition, snapping a seven-match winning streak. A loss sure, but it did little to dampen the historic season.
