The La Cañada Gold U10 softball team finished runner-up in the Rancho Bernardo Grand Slam Summer Jam tournament championship over the weekend. The team faced tough competition from the outset beating North Torrance while falling to Rancho Bernardo and Tierra Canyon in pool play. As the No. 12 seed in elimination play, they advanced to the title game by beating No. 5 Rancho Trabuco 2-1, No. 4 Corona 3-2, a rematch against No. 1 Tierra Canyon 4-0 in the semi-finals before coming up short against No. 2 Alpine 6-5 in the championship game.

Anton Arboleda, a 13-year-old eighth grader at La Cañada High, recently finished an IJGT(International Junior Golf Tour) competition at Rancho Bernardo. Arboleda played in the 13-15 age group and won first place by shooting scores of 74 and 72 in the two-day tournament. After winning this tournament, Arboleda will next play in the IJGT International Championship to be held in Phoenix, Ariz. Jan. 27 to 29. Arboleda has also competed in the prestigious Junior World Golf Tournament in San Diego.

For the third time this season, the La Cañada 14U Softball team lost the championship game of a weekend tournament. And, for the third time this season, the team lost the title game by just one run. This time it was the Rancho Bernardo (San Diego) Grand Slam Summer Jam, where La Cañada won four consecutive games to set up a showdown with San Diego Clairemont. In the championship game, Sumner Hanula singled in the first inning and went all the way to third on an error by the centerfielder.

The La Cañada Gold 10-and-under softball team captured another tournament championship over the weekend of June 19-20, claiming title to the 2009 Carpinteria Beach Classic. La Cañada rolled through the tournament undefeated, outscoring their opponents 51-8 along the way, and has now won their last 11 games in a row. Hanna Heileson recorded 38 strikeouts in 18 innings over the weekend. Heileson combined with Madeline Reilly to no hit Ventura and Thousand Oaks teams on Saturday.

The La Cañada varsity water polo team, which is ranked first in the CIF-Southern Section Division III, participated in the Newport Harbor Tournament from last Thursday through Last Sunday. The Spartans lost the first game to Santa Magarita, 7-6, but rebounded to win the next four against Rancho Bernardo (27-1), Dos Pueblos (15-2), Granite Hills (15-6) and Foothill (10-4). La Cañada will compete in the Villa Park Tournament from today (Thursday) through Saturday. Next Tuesday, the Spartans will travel to Servite to play a 3:15 p.m. nonleague game at Servite.

The literary works of Theodor Geisel, including "Green Eggs and Ham," "Hop on Pop," or "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" and "Cat in the Hat" are the inspiration for this year's fundraiser for Mountain Avenue Elementary School, hosted by Mountain Avenue Committed to Kids (MACK) called "MACK in the Hat." More than 300 guests, friends, families and supporters of Mountain Avenue Elementary can feel like kids again as they celebrate and dress up as their favorite Dr. Seuss characters in a whimsical, "rhymsical," lyrical evening at the Brookside Country Club at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 21. The event will raise funds to enhance the school's library and literacy programs.

Elizabeth J. Adamek and Donald M. Ayres Jr. were united in marriage April 4 in the Chapel at the University of Maryland, College Park, Md. The couple are at home in San Diego and plan to take a wedding trip this summer to Italy. Elizabeth was the sixth generation of brides to use the beaded panel adorning the train of her gown. It was first used by her great-great-great-grandmother at her New York wedding in 1862. She also wore a three-strand pearl necklace that incorporated necklaces inherited from her grandmother and great-aunt.

Charles and Lori Adamek of La Cañada announce the engagement of their daughter, Elizabeth J. Adamek, to Donald M. Ayres Jr., the son of Donald and Kathy Ayres of Jensen Beach, Fla. Beth is the granddaughter of the late Stanley and Virginia Adamek, and the late William and Ruth Klein. Don is the grandson of Barbara and Joseph Ayres of Baltimore, Md., and the late Jennifer and Charles Mortale. Beth graduated from La Cañada High School in 2000 and from the University of Maryland (College Park)
