Jessica Rae Sloan, the daughter of Joseph and Robin Sloan of La Crescenta, will wed Paul Andrew Breckow, son of Dennis and Betsy Breckow of La Crescenta, on July 25 in La Cañada Flintridge, it was announced recently. Jessica is a 2003 graduate of Crescenta Valley High School. She earned her bachelor?s degree in psychology from Azusa Pacific University and a master?s in psychology from Pepperdine University. She currently teaches and works with autistic children at the Elliott Institute in La Crescenta.

Barely familiar with the sport of football, a German teen spending his school year as an exchange student in La Cañada Flintridge is picking up the game so quickly he may soon be advanced from the junior varsity squad to varsity in coming weeks, according to his coach. "When I thought about going to high school in America, I thought about playing football. I had never even touched a football or put on a helmet, before coming to La Cañada," said Alexander Ruether, a senior at La Cañada High School.

What are your resolutions for the new year?   Each new year brings a new exhilaration of hope. As another new year approaches, the marker in time triggers us to reflect on last year’s unaccomplished goals. It is a chance to start over again with a new allotment of hope that this year will actually be different. Oddly enough, our resolutions become quite repetitive. After a while, the roller coaster ride of hope and failure can turn into cynicism, and we just stop playing the yearly resolution game.

Jessie Skenderian, formerly of La Cañada and now of Long Beach, has announced her engagement to Ryan Eckardt of Rossmoor. Ryan is the son of Mary and Jim Eckardt of Rossmoor and the grandson of Sylvia Amaral of San Diego. Jessie graduated from St Bede Catholic School in La Cañada Flintridge and graduated from Santa Barbara High School. She received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from the University of California at Los Angles in 1998 and a master of science degree in sport psychology from California State University, Long Beach in 2003.

Nine locals on UCSB dean’s list Nine La Cañada Flintridge residents were named to the winter quarter 2010 dean’s honor list at UC Santa Barbara. The students and their majors are: Gal Bruck , global studies and psychology; Raeanne Marie Butts , communication; Pablo Jose Ortiz , computer science; Erika Elinor Paulson , pre-biology; Anne Elizabeth Reed , sociology; Hayley Marie Ryan , business economics and sociology; Jamie Christine Ryan , environmental studies; Brian Joseph Shively , pre-business economics; and Daniel Nathan Tilem , psychology.

Jenny Horwath, the daughter of Daniel and Rosy Horwath of La Cañada Flintridge, has become engaged to Andrew Meli of Glen Cove, New York. The engagement was announced at a party given in their honor by Andrew's parents, Paul and Joann Meli. Jenny is a graduate of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy and Loyola Marymount University. She earned her advanced degree in industrial psychology at Adelphi University of Garden City, N.Y. Andrew is a graduate of The College of William and Mary at Williamsburg, Virginia, and he has recently earned his C.P.A.

La Cañada High School junior Lucas Drill completed a program at the University of Cambridge in England over the summer. The Cambridge Scholars Program combined sports, academics and travel. Lucas returned to the program just before the start of the school year. While in the program, Lucas studied philosophy, criminal and forensic psychology and script writing. The local branch of the Italian Catholic Federation at St. Bede the Venerable Catholic in La Cañada Flintridge awarded a $400 scholarship to a Santa Monica High School Jessica Gerhardt. Due to the fact that no students in the local high schools applied, the branch reached out and awarded the scholarship to Gerhardt. At high school, Gerhardt was elected Vicki Viking and was paired off with Victor Viking as the king and queen of Samoland, school mascots at the Pep Rally. Gerhardt served on the school newspaper as a staff artist.

Maelisa McCaffrey, M.A. will teach a class on cultural diversity at La Crescenta Presbyterian Church today (Thursday) and Nov. 9 from 7 -- 8 p.m. both days. This will be a two-hour course, in two different sessions, that will emphasize the changing demographics within La Crescenta and Los Angeles County, communication and interaction with various ethnic and cultural groups, and the church's role in overcoming racial oppression in the United States (and specifically within the surrounding community)

The Couple's Garden is a series of Saturday Evening "date nights" to enhance marriage at La Cañada Presbyterian Church. On Nov. 19 at 5:30 p.m., Drs. Dennis Lowe and Emily Scott Lowe will discuss the "Four Habits of Highly Effective Couples." This lecture is designed to help couples develop more satisfying and lasting relationships. Dennis and Emily Lowe, nationally and internationally known marriage and relationship specialists, have been married for 30 years. She is an instructor in Human Development and Relationships at Pepperdine University and a licensed clinical social worker.
