I fit the demographic of undecided voters. No candidate stands for all my issues. I?ll order a Democratic salad and a Republican dessert, with a Libertarian appetizer and a Green cocktail, now that the rabbis at Adat Ari El convinced me to bring my own shopping bags to the supermarket and to join an organic CSA. ( www.tierramiguel.org). Go figure. It?s lonely in the middle. It?s exhausting. I am tired of e-mails about Barack Obama?s middle name. I am tired of news stories about Sarah Palin?

Ten Years Ago A reception was held at Oakmont Country Club in honor of Dr. Mervyn Purdy, who retired after a 50-year career as a physician. For 36 of those years, Purdy was also the La Cañada school district physician. Twenty Years Ago Noel Ryan, 12, won the championship in his age group of the 1990 Pepsi West-L.A. County Parks and Recreation Basketball Parks and Recreation competition. A sixth-grader at La Cañada Elementary School, Ryan defeated a 13-year-old Alhambra boy by 16 points during the finals, held at halftime during a L.A. Clippers game.

This article is in response to the letter written about an Obama protest which took place in our La Cañada Post Office ( “Obama protest leaves a stamp of hate,” Mailbag, April 10 ). There is growing dissatisfaction with our federal government. Many have lost their health insurance because Obama administration regulations on grandfathering the existing plans were so stringent they did not comply. The result was a higher insurance premium for new plans. How much has yours gone up?

A six-page newsletter recently distributed by Caltrans and Metro concerning the proposed 710 Tunnel project is ruffling the feathers of some La Cañada officials. In addition to what some believe is misleading representation of community response to the proposed tunnel project, the Explorer newsletter touts the tunnel project, and promises to provide readers with ?information about rock layering, water levels, faults and other subsurface conditions that might be encountered if tunneling in the study area.

Ten Years Ago The American flag was seen waving throughout La Cañada on walkways, mailboxes and gates as the community showed its patriotism in the week following the 9/11 attacks on the East Coast.   Twenty Years Ago One week after a former JPL employee filed a lawsuit claiming he was fired for whistle-blowing, four JPL employees filed a $20 million suit claiming they had suffered racial discrimination and harassment on the job.   Thirty Years Ago La Cañada Flintridge Mayor Edmund J. Krause celebrated his 80th birthday, making him the oldest mayor in the state that year.

I was disturbed and appalled by the misleading information presented by Capt. Tim Peters of Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station ("Voters Go to Bat on Three Strikes Law," La Cañada Valley Sun, Sept. 23). By voting YES on Prop 66, it only 'allows' for a re-sentencing hearing, for non-serious and non-violent felons. It does NOT open the flood gates and would NOT automatically release thousands of violent criminals to terrorize our communities. Prop 66 would ONLY restore the original intent of the voters to the first three strikes initiative.

Flight that Fought Back I had an opportunity to view a DVD titled "The Flight That Fought Back" produced and distributed by the Discovery Channel. This was a docudrama chronicling the last minutes of United Flight 93 hijacked by the 9/11 terrorists that crashed in a Pennsylvania field. The scenes were re-created by actual recordings of phone calls from the passengers to family members, a 911 operator and a cell phone representative. It also contained actual recordings of the hijacker who flew the plane.

Now that, as a nation, we have dodged our "doom", I still have a few things to get off my chest. I agree with the editor that most of us can now "resume our lives" which, in reality, if one thinks about it, were never disrupted. Yes, the electoral process has become a "buzz saw" of propaganda machines spewing rhetoric aimed at destroying the opposition and it is wonderful to be free of that. But we are at war and there is nothing normal about that. Especially a war that I and, incidentally, a majority of the world thought should have never been started and, unfortunately, it is not going to end well.

It is shameful if a mere one-third of eligible voters in sewer District 3, in cooperation with a pro-development, pro-sewer city government, is able to force all 1,622 or so properties in District 3 to export all their indoor water via sewers, mostly to the ocean and sometimes untreated, instead of irrigating our trees and replenishing our diminishing underground water basins via onsite septic systems with drinkable water filtered through typically 125-175...
