La Cañada resident Brittany Tom took her interest in fashion to new heights when three of her creations recently were showcased in runway shows at Art Center College of Design’s south campus in Pasadena. A junior from Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, Tom was one of several area teen designers to take the Saturday High class geared especially to high school students. Tom, who first used a sewing machine only two years ago, loved the rigor of the class, which included making and cutting her own patterns, learning about fabric properties, and sewing the designs into finished fashions.

Over 15 of California's top public officials are walking the runaway for The Coalition for Clean Air's fourth annual fashion show, "Clean Air. . . Always in Fashion" at the Wilshire Ebell Club on Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m. The event comes on the heels of the new state legislation mandating a 25 percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 and features representatives modeling the latest eco-friendly garments in support of the Coalition's programs....

Boo-hoo, summer is over. The Labor Day weekend always signals the end of carefree days and getting back to school and business. Vacation photos have been lovingly pasted into albums and carefully put on the shelf for winter viewing. Of course you can’t tell by the weather that summer is over because we are still sweltering around here. But what has been a surprise to me is the humidity that has been seeping into all the summer’s end cracks. “I swan ,” as my Virginia grandmother would say, “it’s so humid that the butterflies are gettin’ their wings all wet.” And if you had any doubt at all about summer’s end all you had to do was turn on your television this past weekend to see all the college football teams in action.
