Assemblyman Anthony Portantino and several colleagues joined Monday in calling on the federal government to spend up to $70 billion to support higher education in California and across the nation. Portantino, who chairs the state Assembly Higher Education Committee, likened the proposal to the government?s GI Bill, which provided college funds for World War II veterans. ?My father went to school under the GI bill,? the La Cañada Democrat said. ?That?s how we went from being an immigrant family to an urban family.

Soap box racers will test the limits of their cars in the Annual Greater Los Angeles All-American Soap Box Derby races this Saturday at 10 a.m. on Michigan Hill. The VIP races will feature local officials, such as Mayor Laura Olhasso, La Cañadans of the Year Meredith and Tom Reynolds and La Cañada Community Center President-elect Joel Smith. ?Challenge races? will also be available for children, and final sign-ups and car inspections for that will be at St. Francis in the parking garage at 5 p.m. Entry fee is $45. ?

One week off its usual pace the Greater Los Angeles Soap Box Derby will take place this Saturday, June 2, on the 'Michigan Hill' (along the easternmost portion of Foothill Boulevard) in La Cañada. The annual event was previously staged during the long Memorial Day weekend, but this year was moved to June to accommodate commencement exercises for the Class of 2007 at St. Francis High School, which is adjacent to the hill. The Derby will be staged from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It's the only day of the year when drivers ?

Six Kiwanis Club Division 3 members traveled recently to Sacramento for an Interclub gathering. The first stop was at the Kiwanis Family House where Kiwanis Lt. Gov. Daryal Gant , representing his home club La Cañada, along with Diane Della Valle , president-elect; Patsy Christianson and Mary Gant were joined by La Cañada A.M. member Dave Hemstreet and Ted Ashby of the Eagle Rock Club. They were treated to an extensive tour and a spaghetti lunch.

National Charity League Inc., Glendale Chapter has announced its board of directors for the upcoming year. La Cañada Flintridge Country Club hosted an evening poolside reception June 15 for the LCUSD to honor local families "graduating" from the District. The idea for the event began from a conversation between longtime friends Randy Strapazon and Sue Bicknell . "We always knew that there were a lot of families having their 'baby' graduate from LCHS in 2007, but we had no idea until the District did a database search that the number would exceed 200," explained Bicknell.

Ten Years Ago Cardinal Roger M. Mahony visited La Cañada to preside at the Funeral Mass for Tom O’Callaghan at St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church. O’Callaghan was founder of a travel agency and had organized trips for both Mahony and his predecessor, Timothy Manning, as well as archdiocese pilgrimages. Twenty Years Ago Carole Siegler was elected by her La Cañada school board colleagues to a fourth term as president of the LCUSD Governing Board.

Join the community on Saturday, May 30, to observe civic leaders compete in the Soap Box Derby Races in La Cañada. Each year, as part of the Annual Greater Los Angeles All American Soap Box Derby, VIP races are scheduled. Participants are given engraved plaques suitable for display. This year there are three VIP races scheduled: Mayor Laura Olhasso will race La Cañadan of the Year Meredith Reynolds, La Cañada Community Center President-elect Joel Smith will race the other La Cañadan of the Year, Tom Reynolds.

Ten Years Ago Parents and Children's Nursery School on Indianola Way announced the arrival of its new director, Marji Golden. Twenty Years Ago The 1993 Music on the Green summer concert series at Descanso Gardens started off on July 4 of that year with two half-hour shows performed by the 60-member Verdugo Hills Chapter of Sweet Adelines, a women's barbershop harmony group. Director was Carolyn Butler. Thirty Years Ago La Cañada Flintridge resident Patricia D. Phillips was named president-elect of the 17,000-member Los Angeles County Bar Assn., the first woman to hold that post.
