When I was a kid, we had a pet monkey named Bono (as in Sonny, not like the rock star in U-2). She was great at parties - balloons and cake are gratuitous when there's a monkey around. I knew two things about Bono: She loved bananas and she was really smart. The more I learn about bananas, the more I realize just how smart she was. Just two bananas can provide enough energy for a hard-core 90-minute workout. Athletes love them for the quick release of sustained energy that comes from the three natural sugars - fructose, sucrose and glucose.

The lazy days of summer bring fond memories of fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables. I grew up in Phoenix where the scorching Arizona sun can sweeten a watermelon like no other. Nothing tastes better on a hot day than an ice-cold watermelon. Maybe you recall the taste of freshpicked blueberries or blackberries. Or maybe piping hot corn on the cob accompanies a trip down memory lane for you. Cravings for fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables means your body is asking for the nutrients.

Pumpkins are dotting the countryside, in every yard and on every front porch. They're a lovely splash of fall color, but more than being decorative, pumpkins are an amazing super fruit. We often call them a vegetable, but this nutritionally dense powerhouse is a member of the gourd family, a fruit. Pumpkin contains an abundance of disease-fighting nutrients, including magnesium, potassium, pantothenic acid, and vitamins C and E. But the component that makes it a “super food” is the synergistic combination of carotenoids.

For Pablo Neruda, the well-known Chilean poet, food was inspirational. His passion for the taste, texture, color and aroma of good food left us with writings that will make your mouth water. His devotion to food brought him a Nobel Prize and motivated many a shy cook to venture into the kitchen. Neruda loved tomatoes - not just “loved” as in ate them a lot - he loved and adored them down to his soul, and rhapsodized his feelings through magical prose and verse. My favorite line closes his famous poem, “Oda al Tomate”: “The tomato offers its gift of fiery color and cool completeness.” That line makes me want to hold, sniff and squeeze a tomato while I decide how to eat it. Summer-ripened tomatoes are the perfect choice for fresh, beautiful food that packs a nutritious punch.
