Opera Pacific, led by Artistic Director John DeMain, presents the complete score of The Gershwin's opera "Porgy and Bess" on Oct. 4-5, performed in concert, during the opening celebration for the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, which is part of the Orange County Performing Arts Center's expansion. The Gershwin's masterpiece will give Opera Pacific's audience the first chance to hear an operatic performance in the new space that has already been acclaimed for its acoustics.

Plácido Domingo, the Eli and Edythe Broad General Director, announced that the LA Opera will stage Porgy and Bess this May at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Renowned as one of the greatest American operas of all time, Porgy and Bess is by George Gershwin, DuBose and Dorothy Heyward and Ira Gershwin. Internationally award-winning director Francesca Zambello helms this powerful production from the Washington National Opera, which depicts the African-American experience through a story of love found and lost, set in early 20th-century South Carolina.

The La Cañada Flintridge Library begins this year's season of opera talks with a presentation by Diane Beltoya from the La Opera Speakers Bureau on the "Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny" on Monday, Jan. 22, at 6:30 p.m. Mahagonny, an Old West boomtown, rises from the desert to become a razzle-dazzle mecca for lust, liberty and the pursuit of pleasure. Kurt Weill penned a haunting score, which crosses over from opera to cabaret to Broadway. The opera talks are sponsored by the Los Angeles Opera and the County of Los Angeles Public Library.

Mary Lou Gottlieb of the LA Opera Speakers Bureau will present a talk on Porgy & Bess at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 16, at the LCF Library. Gershwin's emotionally powerful story of love lost and found centers on Porgy's attempt to rescue the promiscuous Bess from the clutches of her murderous lover Crown and the conniving drug dealer Sportin' Life. No other American work for the stage contains so many famous songs such as "Summertime" and "It Ain't Necessarily So." Locals are invited to attend the fascinating talk on an American classic at the La Canada Flintridge Library (County of Los Angeles Public Library)

Pastor Elaine Cho of La Cañada United Methodist Church will address how to overcome fear during the 10:30 a.m. worship service Sunday. Afterward an all-church luncheon will be held. The church will host a Valentine's concert and afternoon tea at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15. The musical program will be led by Carnegie Hall violinist Svetlana Oganesian performing selections from Mozart, Kreisler, Gershwin's “Porgy and Bess” and Scott Joplin's ragtime pieces. Free child care is available.

La Cañada United Methodist Church's Sunday service features Pastor Elaine Cho. After the 10:30 a.m. service, the church's Senior Fellowship will host a luncheon with a speaker from Court Appointed Special Advocate, an organization that supports foster children. On Saturday, the church will host an afternoon musical performance featuring selections from George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" and tangos by Ástor Piazzolla. Tea, sandwiches and scones will be served. Cake plates will be available for purchase.

Celebrated Panamanian-American baritone Nmon Ford and soprano Nichole Cabell will be the special guest artists at the "Guys and Dolls"-themed Pasadena POPS Orchestra concerts on Aug. 19 and 20 at Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive in La Cañada. In keeping with the concert's "Guys and Dolls" theme, Ford and Cabell will render a variety of Broadway and operatic classics that capture the time-honored dance between the sexes. Under the direction of Pasadena POPS Music Director Rachael Worby, the pair will vocalize the contretemps of Nathan and Adelaide, Romeo and Juliet, Tony and Maria, Porgy and Bess and other historic stage couplings, from "The Marriage of Figaro" to "Gone With the Wind."

La Cañada residents Abraham Frandsen, viola and Julie Charles, first violin along with La Crescenta residents Jim Mettler, first trombone, Jim Stanley, first clarinet, Susan Stanley, first flute, Jason Jensen, second trombone of Sunland and Marva Washington of Sun Valley are some of the musicians who make up the 60-member orchestra "Crown City Chamber Players," which will be performing two free concerts this month. Marvin Neumann conducts. Solo performers are Ella Lee, soprano and Robert De Vaughn, baritone.

On Monday, March 12, at 6:30 p.m. Lyla Forlani, Production Stage Manager for the Los Angeles Opera, will speak at the La Canada Flintridge Library. Lyla Forlani marks this season as her eighth with the Los Angeles Opera. A classically trained musician, it was while studying bassoon at Indiana University's prestigious school of music that Lyla's love for opera was sparked. In this "Behind the Scenes" program, Lyla will talk about what it's like calling a show, prepping for a show and what she does during the show.
