The La Cañada boys' varsity soccer team, which shared the Rio Hondo League title with San Marino, was quickly eliminated from postseason play on Feb. 17. The Spartans were shut out, 4-0, by host Pomona in a CIF Southern Section Division IV first round lower bracket match at the Pomona Unified School District Sports Complex. La Cañada finished 13-11-2 overall and 6-2-2 in league while Pomona, which took second in the Valley Vista League, improved to 11-10-1 overall and advanced to the second round of play.

The San Gabriel Pomona Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross on July 1 announced its new noard of directors. The board is comprised of six new community leaders and eight continuing members. The new members are: Fernando Del Rio of Dome Enterprises, James Drinkard of White Memorial Medical Center, Robin Fordyce of Commerce Construction Co., Maxine Harris of Whittier Trust Company, Dr. Gary Thomas of Arcadia and Linda Marsh of AHMC Healthcare Inc. in Alhambra.

A 23-point first quarter and a 19-point fourth quarter helped the La Cañada boys' varsity basketball team defeat Pomona, 64-55, last Saturday to win the Arroyo High Tournament championship. La Cañada, which upped its overall record to 5-0, hosted La Salle in a nonleague contest on Tuesday, but results were not available at press time. The Spartans are hosting the La Cañada Holiday Tournament, which began yesterday (Wednesday), through next Tuesday. In addition to the Arroyo Tournament crown, La Cañada's Rhett Anderson was named the tournament's MVP and the two Malik Bothers, Abe and Adam, made the All-Tournament Team.

Local Young Poet Leaves Her Mark Teaching Poetry Grish of Ambiance Floral Design handed me the hair wreaths and gave Gretchen the balloons. We raced to the car for a quick run to Descanso Gardens. Grabbing hairpins and camera, we dashed into the gardens for the one of the highlights of our year: adorning the debutantes from La Cañada Thursday Club who volunteer to sell raffle tickets at the S.E.E.Ds gala fund raiser. The event was held Saturday evening. I'm sure my friend Dotty Greenawalt, a past president of the club, will ask me what I thought of the girls and I'll tell her, "Oh they were so sweet, talented and pretty.

Mission Circuit Dog Show — Fri., May 26 through May 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Returning for its annual Memorial Day weekend event, more than 145 breeds will compete for top dog over four days of trials and tests. The dogs and owners arrive from all over the United States, Canada and Mexico to be a part of one of the largest dog shows in the country. General admission is $6, ages 60+ $4, ages 6 to 12 $3, and free for ages 5 and younger. Parking is at Gate 17 on Fairplex Dr. Information (323)

One year ago, the United States braced itself for Hurricane Katrina. What followed was unimaginable in size and scope. But communities across this nation joined the American Red Cross in rising to the challenge of feeding, sheltering and providing emotional support to millions of our neighbors on the Gulf Coast. Local Red Cross chapters and their community partners were at the heart of the response to Hurricane Katrina. The San Gabriel Pomona Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross deployed about 150 volunteers, including some from La Canada, to the affected areas on the Gulf Coast and raised approximately $4.7 million that went directly to the national organization's Katrina Relief Fund.

The following are updates on local athletes at the collegiate level. Nick Gentili (St. Francis High, 2009) junior, Pomona-Pitzer baseball: Gentili put himself in the conversation as one of the best offensive players in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this year, as he cracked the league's leader board in several statistics. Gentili was named to the All-West Region second team by the American Baseball Coaches Assn. on June 4 after he posted a team-high .401 batting average (59 for 147)

LCHS Band performs at fair The La Canada High School Marching Band performed at the Pomona Fair on Sept. 12. Under the direction of Band Director Susan Hamre, and led by Drum Major Kevin Kraft, the 129-member Marching Band and the 13-member Color Guard was invited to compete at the fair. During the fair, several marching bands perform each day. The top-three are invited to return on Sept. 26 for a final competition. The band performed “Semper Fidelis” by John Philip Sousa as it marched through the fair grounds.

The San Gabriel Pomona Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross is hosting its 4th Annual Chinese New Year Celebration event on Saturday, March 3, at the Pacific Palms Resort, City of Industry. Proceeds raised from this event directly benefit the emergency preparedness and disaster response programs in the San Gabriel Pomona Valley, benefiting more than 1.8 million people in 45 communities. The Chinese New Year Celebration is a festive evening of gourmet Chinese food, award-winning wine and entertainment.

For the first five innings of its CIF Southern Section Division V Championship game against Pomona Catholic last Saturday morning, the Flintridge Prep girls' varsity softball team had high hopes of victory. A win at Deanna Manning Stadium in Irvine would have given the Rebels their first CIF crown in program history. Up to this point, Prep had won seven games in a row, six by shutouts. The Rebels' top pitcher, Jenna Schachtner, who has struck out more than 320 batters this season, was at the top of her form.
