Services are planned for 10 a.m. Sunday at St. George’s Episcopal Church in La Cañada for Jerry Healey, lifelong announcer, lover of all things Irish, and genuine, kind-hearted Good Guy, who died peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 3, at City of Hope. Born in Scranton, Pa., in 1932, Healey began his career in Philadelphia when a scout came to his elementary school classroom and auditioned youngsters for a children’s serial radio show, “The Magic Lady.” All the boys in the cast wore knickers except Eddie Fisher, whose mother allowed long pants.

On Saturday, June 9, celebrity players will be among those battling it out for great prizes and bragging rights at 1736 Family Crisis Center's First Annual Poker Classic. The action will be at Commerce Casino, located at 6131 Telegraph Rd. in the city of Commerce. Registration and dinner reception are at 4 p.m. with tournament play starting at 6 p.m. Funds from the evening will benefit battered women, children, and families in crisis served by 1736 Family Crisis Center. Leyna Nguyen will serve as the tournament's event chairperson.

Ten Years Ago The median price for a home in La Cañada Flintridge in late July 2002 was reported to have increased to $754,000, which was 24.9% higher than the same period a year earlier. One local Realtor said it was the best market he'd seen since 1989 and that properties priced close to market value were receiving multiple offers, some above asking price. Twenty Years Ago La Cañada resident Barbara Corson was basking in the glow of having been the grand champion in a ladies' poker tournament sponsored by Bally's Casino in Reno.

The Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge will kick off the city's annual Memorial Day weekend celebration with a casino night. The High Roller event takes place on Friday, May 24 - the beginning of Fiesta Days. Activities include black jack, poker, roulette, craps and spin-to-win. Prizes will be awarded to winners. The event runs from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. After a photographer caught him playing iPhone poker during a Senate committee hearing on Syria, Sen John McCain (R-Arizona) tried to pass the incident off as a joke. “Scandal! Caught playing iPhone game at 3+ hour Senate hearing - Worst of all I lost!” tweeted McCain. The good news is that McCain played the game in the daytime. Here in the 91011, we can relate because far too many of us have disrupted our sleep patterns with a quick game of Spider Solitaire at night. On the other hand, he is a senator.

?Cirque du Soleil? was the theme of La Cañada High School?s Monte Carlo dance. The themed dance and card events took place Jan 12, preceded on Friday by a Monte Carlo assembly. As attendees entered the dance they received poker chips which they used to bet in various card games. The dealers were teachers from the high school . The school?s large north gym was the site of the event, with a dance floor in the center and card games at tables encircling it, providing the students with a chance to bet their poker chips for prizes like Clippers?

Casino night fundraiser planned for center A casino night is planned for 7-11 p.m. July 17 to raise funds for the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge , 4469 Chevy Chase Drive. The event will include a taco truck, beverages and desserts, a silent auction and prizes for guests. Attendees will also have a chance to participate in a poker tournament and other classic casino games as part of the evening. "It's going to be a fun and exciting night for the center, for our community, and for all of our supporters," said Kelly Armaly, vice president of the board of directors.

A group of lifelong friends has found that the secret to preserving happy memories is to keep those memories alive at the poker table. For one Monday a month since 2005, seven men who share nearly 70 years of history gather to play cards at the La Cañada Flintridge home of Dr. Mike Missakian. The retired radiologist moved in with daughter Maylene Glidewell, also a physician, shortly after his wife passed away, bringing with him this simple ritual rooted back in his schoolboy days.

Anew design to alleviate Southern Californian smog has been revealed by the AQMZ. The design was finalized last week at a late night poker game. The AQMZ lost. The unique deal between the government agency and the upstart Fans-R-U Corporation was approved last Friday. By drilling holes through the nearby mountains the smog will be blown through the holes with a newly designed high tech device into the less powerful desert communities on the other side. Scientists have determined that although the blowing device is highly efficient it requires a great deal of power.
