The following are updates on area Major League Baseball players . ? Mark Loretta (St. Francis High, 1989) Los Angeles Dodgers infielder: The two-time All-Star has gotten additional playing time with the Dodgers recently concluding a six-game stretch of interleague road games. For instance, Loretta had a two-run double in the third inning of the Dodgers? 6-5 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. Loretta, who started at first base, had two hits in six plate appearances.

Already a week into the season and the La Cañada baseball team has won their first tournament of the year, beating Eastside, 16-2, to win the Royal SoCal Tournament on Saturday. They then beat Azusa on Monday, 12-2. The Spartans are off to their best start since the 2005 season, when they started 8-0 and won the Daily News Invitational Tournament. That team finished the season 18-4, outscoring opponents 169-54, losing to Cathedral in the second round of the CIF-SS Div. V playoffs.

Scoring 14 runs will do more than please Flintridge Prep baseball Coach Robert ?Buzz? Cook. That?s what happened when Prep took on Chadwick earlier this week, defeating the Dolphins, 14-8. The feelings didn?t last, though, as the Rebels only mustered two runs the next day against Golden Valley in a 12-2 nonleague loss. There?s still a sore spot that?s perplexed Cook throughout much of the first month of the season: deficiencies on defense. Flintridge Prep (4-4, 2-0 in league)

The following are updates from local athletes who are currently playing at the college level. ? Kathryn Poet (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2007) sophomore outfielder, University of Missouri softball: Poet helped the Tigers, the Big-12 champs, capture the Los Angeles Super Regional at Easton Stadium on Sunday and move on to the College World Series in Oklahoma City for the first time in 14 years, where, on Thursday, they?ll face Arizona State. Missouri (50-10) picked up a lopsided 9-1 win in the deciding game of the best-of-three series against UCLA, the No. 2 seed.

There were driving forces this past season for the La Cañada High softball team. Two players were among a group which helped the Spartans experience league and playoff success. Anna Edwards and Lauren O'Leary are those two players, and they have added to their 2010 achievements after being named to CIF Southern Section Division V first team. Together they added to the two main strengths that helped drive the Spartans — dominant pitching and timely hitting. "We gave up a total of 14 earned runs in a 30-game season; that says a tremendous amount about our pitchers [O'Leary and Lauren Cox]

Babe Ruth Cardinals 11, Dodgers 1 All 12 players contributed in a good win for the Cardinals. Cardinals JC Cooper blasted two doubles and a single and Zane Bodmer tripled and doubled. Justin Higa reached base four times on four plate appearances with a two-RBI double. Anthony Perasso hit three singles. Nick Kern scored three runs and added two clutch hits. Defense came up huge with big plays from Ian Bogert, Blake Shepherd, Derek Georgino and Erick Lankey. They made some momentum changing plays behind the superb pitching of Tommy Bartholetti and Anthony Perasso.

The following are updates on area Major League Baseball players .   Trevor Bell (Crescenta Valley High, 2005) Los Angeles Angels, pitcher After making his debut last week, Trevor Bell came back on Tuesday to win his first career game, a 5-4 victory over the Cleveland Indians. “Any first major league win would be a dream come true,” Bell told mlb.com. “Even if it was a 10-9 game, and yourself and your team gets the win, that’s a dream.
