Y Tribes’ pancake breakfast starts at 6:30 Saturday Give Mom an early Mother’s Day gift and take her to the 59th annual Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA Pancake Breakfast, which will take place from 6:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at the YMCA, 1930 Foothill Blvd. Y Tribe dads and kids will be flipping their spatulas to help fund YMCA family programs. The Y Tribe program brings together fathers, daughters, and sons to share outdoor experiences from campfires to the Pinewood Derby.

The Crescenta-Cañada YMCA will host its 56th annual Pancake Breakfast Saturday, May 13, starting at 6:30 a.m. and running until 11a.m. Y Tribe members and their parents will be wielding spatulas and flipping pancakes all morning to help fund YMCA programs. The annual event brings together families, friends and community members, all in an effort to insure that great social and healthy lifestyles programs continue to be available through the Y. "We set up on Friday, and then we start the grills at about 5 a.m. on Saturday.

Evan Edwards is a native of La Cañada, born on Sept. 2, 1989. He is the eldest of three, having two sisters: Megan, who is 15, and Anna 14. In the first grade, Evan joined Cub Scout Pack 310 in La Crescenta. While in Cub Scouts, Evan earned the God and Family Award as well as the Arrow of Light. As a Cub, Evan enjoyed his first camping experiences, making new friends, and building Pinewood Derby cars with his Dad. In 2001, Evan joined Boy Scout Troop 509. The emphasis on outings, high adventure, scout initiative, and leadership made Troop 509 a great choice and a wonderful scouting experience.

Citywide food, supply drive La Cañada Elementary Junior Girl Scout Troop 8901 coordinated a citywide food and supply drive to support the Pasadena Ronald McDonald House. There were so many donations the Ronald McDonald food storage facility was packed The girls would like to send out a huge ?thank you? to the residents of La Cañada for all their generous support. ? 10 Commandments Hike is Jan. 31 The ?10 Commandments Hike? from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 31 is a symbolic event to help enrich Scouts in understanding the importance of reverence, honor to God and respect for the belief of others.

The annual Pinewood Derby Race sped through the Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA on March 9. More than 100 elementary-aged children raced toy cars as parents and friends cheered from the sidelines. Jeff Foster from St. George's Troop 502 has been awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. He will be having an Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony at St. George's Episcopal Church in April. Foster has also been awarded the highly esteemed Order of the Arrow award during his time as a Boy Scout. For his Eagle Scout service project, Foster provided leadership in the construction of a storage shed for La Cañada Elementary Cub Scout Pack 512 at the Lutheran Church in the Foothills where the Cub Scouts meet for their annual Rain Gutter Regatta and Pinewood Derby races.

Holden Kilbride new Eagle Scout Holden Kilbride, of Boy Scout Troop 501 from La Cañada Congregational Church, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. This honor follows his 12 years in Scouting, starting as a Tiger Cub, and continuing through Webelos with Paradise Canyon, Pack 519. As a Cub Scout, Holden earned the Arrow of Light. He has great memories of his Cub Scout days, particularly the Pinewood Derby and many Scout trips and hikes. As a Boy Scout, Holden has held the leadership positions of senior patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader and troop guide.

Longtime La Cañada residents Tom and Meredith Reynolds were recently selected the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada’s La Cañadans of the Year. The couple has lived in La Cañada since 1982; however, Tom Reynolds grew up in this town and was a 1972 La Cañada High School graduate. He also is a second-generation La Cañadan of the Year, as his dad, James Reynolds earned that honor in 1961. “This truly is a great honor,” Meredith Reynolds said, adding, “La Cañada is one of the strongest volunteer communities I’ve ever lived in, and it’s an honor to be recognized in a town that really values volunteerism.

Early Monday morning several creative engineers made their way out to their test field. Anticipation could be felt in the air, this was the moment these engineers had been waiting for, the moment of truth. Would their newly engineered rockets reach their ultimate altitude and, more importantly, their fragile cargo land safely? No these were not employees from NASA or JPL but students from Rosemont Middle School. They were members of the "Bottle Rockets, Gravity Dragsters, Hand Gliders and More" class, a Glendale Community College fee based summer school program.

ACTIVITIES Y-Tribes Guides & Princesses New Member Night — Monday, Sept. 28, 7 to 8 p.m. The Y-Tribes program at the Crescenta-Cañada and Verdugo Hills Family YMCAs provide quality time for busy dads and their children while participating in enjoyable and constructive activities. Dads and their kindergarten through fourth-grade sons or daughters will enjoy Snow Camp, skate night, Friday Night Flick with In & Out, the Pinewood Derby and more. Participants are required to attend New Member Night at the Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA where tribes will be assigned.
