Making a Pie Doesn't Have to be a Killjoy I read cookbooks the way others read a volume of poems or short stories. A good recipe has rhythm and style. The simpler the recipe, the more the ingredients must be perfectly balanced. It is easy to hide a few mistakes when you're working with 12 ingredients, making a stew or soup, but vegetables and salads, in particular, require exactness. Maya Angelou produced a cookbook last year at the urging of her friend, Oprah Winfrey, that is a glorious celebration of her life.

It was Jan. 9, 1970. I remember it as though it was yesterday. I had six hours remaining. I was flying out of Norton at 2 p.m., heading to Vietnam. With the time I had left I decided to spend the day doing what I enjoyed, just in case. I threw my sea bag in my MGB, put the top down, donned my aviator sunglasses and headed to a greasy spoon south of Corona Del Mar called The Cookery. They made the best breakfast burritos and chocolate cream pie. From there I drove to the Shake Shack near Laguna and had a chocolate malt.

Payback is tough. But at Crescenta Valley High School last Friday, it was sweet, too. Dozens of students tossed whipped cream pies in the faces of a handful of teachers to raise money to help a 15-year-old Phoenix, Ariz., girl, Darcy Flavin, pay for a heart transplant. At snack and at lunch, students lobbed paper plates filled with the treacly treat at their favorite - or not so favorite - instructors. The event, sponsored by the school's National Honor Society chapter, raised over $100 for Flavin's surgery.

Last year, Penny Keaton, award-winning pie maker, let me print her Los Angeles County fair first prize-winning pumpkin pie recipe in time for Thanksgiving. The recipe we published did not include ingredients or directions for the pie crust. Penny had just started a new business, teaching classes in pie baking. Her pie crust ingredients and preparation technique were at the heart of her course. Since then, Penny's business has grown, aided by a local cooking school and an affiliation with King Arthur's flour.

The La Cañada Unified School District has submitted a memorandum of understanding to the state, district officials said this week, positioning itself to possibly receive a portion of $700 million in federal funding through the Race to the Top initiative. ?We have decided at this point to sign the MOU because there is a potential for funding to come through Race to the Top,? Superintendent James Stratton said. ?We just don?t believe that it is prudent at this point to ignore any possible funding source.

The Spirit of Freedom Club was just a spur of the moment, or spirit of the moment, idea some students from La Cañada High School had when they were driving down Foothill Boulevard. They began praising America loudly and it seemed to lift spirits of those they passed. Each member of the club chose a hero-like American moniker. ?We decided to have an America Fest 2009,? said Jacob Walters, who adopted the alias of Lucas Liberty. Draped in an American flag and Uncle Sam hats, the boys went to McDonald?
