Members and friends of La Cañada Presbyterian Church are pooling their resources and skills to help children and their families in Los Angeles, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Burma and surrounding communities. They have raised $198,000 and hope to reach $275,000 by the end of June. Through their annual program called "Faith Missions," the church gives the challenge to members and friends not only to give financially but also to go to where their money goes. After church member Belinda Randolph and her 9-year-old son visited with homeless people in Pershing Square in Los Angeles, she said, "I learned that homeless people are often lonely.

Q. Can you recommend some things to do over the holidays that are free or low cost? On Christmas Eve from 3 to 9 p.m. visit the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion of the Music Center to enjoy choirs, music ensembles, and dance companies representing the diversity of cultures across Southern California. The entire six hours is simulcast live on KCET public television. The event is free and people come and go throughout the six hours. Try outdoor ice skating at LA’s Downtown on Ice. The public ice rink fills a good part of Pershing Square across from the Biltmore Hotel.

Speaking at the OneCityOneBook event in La Cañada on Sunday, Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez described his first visit to skid row in downtown Los Angeles in the spring of 2005. “[There are] veterans who have fallen out of wheelchairs. It is just unbelievable. Prostitutes that are living in the port-a-pots that they use as their brothel. This is a complete collapse. And I am looking at [Anthony Ayers] thinking, this is the guy who brought me here. I am learning about music from this guy; I am learning about courage, and I need to shine a light on this.
