I have spent my entire life avoiding anything even remotely minty. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven when Colgate finally started making a citrus-flavored toothpaste so I didn’t have to hold my breath while brushing my teeth. So it was with a profound sense of disbelief that I opened my birthday present from Royal (the man previously known around our house as “Honey” or “Darling” but now and forever-after referred to as “Him”)

Crestview had its last Walk-a-Thon with Head of School Marge Hanna on Sunday, Oct 15. Hanna is retiring this year, and the turnout was fantastic. Teachers, staff, students, alumni and parents walked laps around the St. Francis High School track to earn money for the Marge Hanna Endowment Fund for Technology. Walkers enjoyed music and games by a deejay, lemons with peppermint sticks, homemade snacks and food from the In-N-Out Burger truck. Prizes were given for the most laps walked (the gumball machine was a big draw)

I try to approach restaurants with impartiality but the cold hard truth is I don't like cupcakes. The white sugar, white flour, and unnatural colors turn me off. They're the adult version of Barbie dolls. I prefer my sweets more rustic. So when Goodie Girls Cupcakes opened their second store in La Cañada (the first is in Glendale on Broadway), a store decked out in bright pink stripes and mini-chandeliers, I stayed away. But in the interest of readers who do like the treat and because I needed some energy for more Christmas shopping, I stopped in for a holiday-themed cupcake.

Main Street U.S.A. at Disneyland has a turn of the century American town feel to its shops and stores. Hollywood does not. But now the Walk of Fame has a little section where its the 1900s again. Disney's Soda Fountain and Studio Store is open next door to the El Capitan on Hollywood Boulevard, featuring homemade ice cream from Dewar's Ice Cream and Candies, a landmark in Bakersfield. According to Ed Collins, a Montrose resident and the general manager of the store, El Capitan Theatre, originally built in 1926, was restored in 1991, and since then has been used by Disney as a movie theater.

Santa came early this year, delivering some great movies for all the good little boys and girls who are into comedies. "Fun with Dick and Jane" and "The Producers," released last Wednesday, are good answers to get away from all the turkey and peppermint candy canes. "Fun with Dick and Jane" is funny but painful to watch if you've ever had money troubles or if you are a Jim Carrey fan. He is not phenomenal in this film but is not horrible. He is Dick Harper, and his wife is Jane (Tea Leoni)

After more than $100,000, 30,000 volunteer hours and 10,000 rose petals, the La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Association's 2006 float entry, "The Great Howldini," entertained the crowd that braved heavy rains to line Pasadena's famed Colorado Boulevard Monday morning. This year's float won the Tournament of Roses' Theme Trophy, the award given to the float that best presents the parade's theme, which this year was "It's Magical." La Cañada's float featured a number of magic tricks, including a dog that pulled a rabbit out of a hat in a puff of smoke.

Loa Blasucci The age old question — "what shall I have to drink?" Coffee, soda, a frozen chocolate mocha, tea, milk, juice? With every beverage you bring to your lips, you make a choice. It sounds like this in your head: hmmmm, if I make it a frozen chocolate mocha, I'll have to burn those 500+ calories, and have maxed out my carbs for the day (almost 90). If I have a coke, I'll spike my insulin and worry about the benzene in my system. Milk-no thanks, I'll be blowing my nose all day. Hmm, what shall I have?

Not many things can entice me out of our warm home on a cold Sunday afternoon, but the promise of a chocolate-filled afternoon at the Langham Hotel (the Huntington-Sheraton of our youth and more recently a Ritz-Carlton) was too much for even a homebody like me to resist. If any activity is worth switching out of jeans and an old sweater for more refined attire, it’s tea in the old hotel’s Lobby Lounge. So when the invitation came to be a guest at the inaugural “Chocolate Tea” last Sunday I wasted no time in rsvp-ing.
