Jim Horton, a native of Amazonia, Mo., was a man of bright blue eyes and Pendleton shirts. In the early 1920s, the Ford Motor Company hired him to drive a Model T west from St. Joseph to Sacramento, retracing the route of the Pony Express. It was a publicity stunt and probably the only thing he ever did in his lifetime that landed his name in the newspaper, until his 1967 obituary appeared. As I understand it, Jim suffered a sunstroke while roofing his Missouri home a few years before he took on that assignment to drive cross-country.

Some of my friends don't understand why I signed up for the Camp Pendleton Mud Run. My husband did not sign up. Our daughter did not sign up. Some days, I have trouble remembering why I signed up. The Marines describe the "world-famous" mud run as "a challenging 10K run with hills, tire obstacles, river crossings, two 5-foot walls with mud on both sides, tunnel crawl, slippery hill climb, and the final 30-foot mud pit. " Penelope Glifort, from...

I am old. I am out of shape. That's why I've signed up for the 5K portion of the Buffalo Alley Run at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. But first, a disclaimer. They call it the Buffalo Alley 5K Run. I call it the Buffalo Alley 5K Walk . If I train hard enough, it might be the Buffalo Alley 5K Run/Walk . Nowadays, the Buffalo Alley Run honors the fallen and wounded. The 5K is a spinoff of the 10K, which was formerly known as the "Horno Ridge Run." According to organizers, the new 10K offers the "ultimate" in Hard Corps Competition in a cross-country 10K. The course begins at Camp Horno, home of 1st Marines, and winds up, up, up, into the hills of Camp Pendleton.

He is 27 years old, stands fit and trim at 6'2'' and will return for a second tour of military duty in Iraq sometime this month. His name is Cpl. Michael T. Morton and he is a U.S. Marine. For me, the war in Iraq now has a face. I met Morton and members of his family last Saturday night during a surprise birthday party for his father, Marty Morton, who is director of Maintenance, Facilities and Operations for La Cañada Unified School District. The party in La Crescenta celebrated a dual purpose, as it was also a farewell send-off for Mike.

Anyone who had been second-guessing the current risk for brush fires in Southern California probably set aside their doubts Tuesday afternoon, as brush fires roared up in Burbank, Fontana and as far south as Camp Pendleton. With high heat, low humidity and the Santa Ana winds descending on the Southland, fire officials are urging residents to be cautious and observant. "Windy season is upon us...If the public sees anything suspicious, please report it," said Chief Ernie Golphenee of Los Angeles County Fire Department Station 19 in La Canada Flintridge.

Several members of the Don José Verdugo Chapter, National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, traveled to Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base recently to participate in a program, Dining With The Wounded Warriors, where they served hamburgers, roasted corn and ice cream to 20 soldiers who are in various stages of recovery from injuries. “When we learned about this great program during the California State Society NSDAR Conference last March we decided as a Chapter to sponsor one of the meals,” said Lisa Harley, second vice regent of the Don José Verdugo Chapter.
