The La Cañada freshman baseball team pummeled South Pasadena 19-5 last week in a five-inning game. The Spartans improved to 9-1-1, 5-5-1 in league. The La Cañada offense continued to produce big numbers, sending 13 batters to the plate in the second inning and 11 in the third inning. The torrid Spartan hitting, along with Coach Greg Lee's successful strategy of aggressive base running, resulted in La Cañada leading 19-2 after three innings. The hit parade was led by Michael Lee (two singles and four runs)

The Spartan freshman baseball team prevailed 9-8 against Temple City on March 29 in a closely contested game. La Cañada was leading 8-6 heading into the seventh inning when Temple City scored two runs to tie the score. Josh Hanson walked to start the bottom of the seventh, and then stole second and third base. Troy Marderosian singled home Hanson to secure the victory. Cole Kendall pitched six strong innings for La Cañada, striking out four and allowing five hits. The La Cañada offense had three hits a piece from Michael Knopf and Marderosian, two hits from Ben Drake, a triple from Paul Lee, and singles from Adam Overgaard, Michael Lee, Kendall and Hanson.

The La Cañada High freshman football team defeated the Temple City Rams, 32-3, at home last Friday. In the first half of the game, the Spartans scored a touchdown with each possession. The TDs included two pass receptions by Dodge Williams, running TDs by Omar Rady and Jonathan Sparks and a quarterback sneak by Jeff Grigg. Contributing to the 280 impressive yards on the ground were running backs David Miller, Jamie Dick, Sparks, Ryan Shurie and Billy Platissa. Rady continues to excel with 138 all purpose yards.

The Spartan freshmen team continued their offensive rampage at South Pasadena last Friday, winning 18-7. The offense was led by Ben Drake, who homered and hit two singles. Michael Lee had two hits and scored four runs. Paul Lee homered and doubled, Michael Knopf and Josh Hanson each had two hits and Troy Marderosian and Adam Overgaard each added singles. The La Cañada freshmen combined for 32 steals in their consecutive victories against South Pasadena and Pasadena last Wednesday. Cole Kendall pitched four innings to record the win, and La Cañada received three solid innings of relief from Michael Lee. The Spartans' record now stands at 6-1, with their only loss to Monrovia earlier in the season.

A hardy band of 17 boys and adults from JPL Boy Scout Troop 509 backpacked through the High Sierras earlier this month, completing a 32-mile circuit over seven days. The trek, part of the troop's annual High Adventure excursion, began at the 10,000-foot Cottonwood Springs trailhead in the John Muir Wilderness. Over the ensuing week, the scouts traversed the 12,300-foot New Army Pass and the 11,400-foot Siberian Pass. The group camped near lakes and rivers in the Sierras, where the scouts fished for the rare Golden Trout.

The La Cañada Junior Baseball/Softball Association will host the boys' 14-year-old Babe Ruth State Tournament from July 21 through July 25 at the La Cañada High varsity baseball field. Teams from throughout California will compete for the right to advance to the Babe Ruth Regional Championships in Sacramento. The winner of that tournament will advance to the Babe Ruth World Series in North Carolina. The state tournament will feature some of the best youth baseball talent in California.

The La Cañada junior varsity team concluded its season with two convincing league victories. In the first, they beat South Pasadena by a score of 20-5. Leading the way on offense was Andrew Schiller, who had a mammoth home run and single, and scored three runs. Charlie Banks, Max Russell and Jeff Oeschel all had multiple hit games and scored three runs each. Brian Collins doubled and scored four runs and Garrett Grey, Harry Rindler, Luis Carrosqueros, Matt Whitham and A. J. Kim all added hits in the contest.

The La Cañada freshmen baseball team lost only their second game of the year on April 24, falling to Temple City 12-8. Temple City scored three runs in the first inning and six runs in the third to take a 9-1 lead. La Cañada rallied for seven runs in the sixth inning to tie the score at 9-9, but Temple City scored three in the seventh inning to prevail. Jake Borlund tripled and singled for the Spartans, Cole Kendall had two singles and Tim Kim and Ben Drake had singles.
