by Carol Cormaci A u naturel , I stepped out our kitchen door and onto the back patio yesterday morning to reach over and turn on the spigot controlling water flow into the pool. I was fresh out of the shower and wanted to bring the pool level up to the prescribed height before heading to the office. That gave me about a 20-minute window to get the pool filled, so I felt rushed. I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me to cover up before tending to the pool-filling errand, but I didn’t.

It’s a late August afternoon, and the one-eyed cat is stretched out underneath a picnic table in our backyard, dreaming, perhaps, of the mouse that escaped his claws earlier in the day. I’d like to be as relaxed as our old red tabby, but I can’t shake the fear that we won’t get our garden looking good in time for the gathering we’re hosting in late September. When Gil and I were newlyweds who had just moved into our first home, a much wiser woman said to me, “Be sure to hold a lot of parties.

As the sun slipped below the horizon on Friday, more than 100 Muslims gathered, filling the back patio at the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge. Assembled in neat rows, they raised their hands to their ears. "Allah Akbar," they intoned — "God is great" — before prostrating themselves, touching foreheads to the ground. The attendees were there to share prayers and sustenance during the fourth annual Ramadan Interfaith Potluck Dinner, hosted by the Islamic Congregation of La Cañada Flintridge (ICLCF)

La Cañada's Memorial Park was the happening place last Sunday when Dean Colley's Hot August Nights Band, a Neil Diamond tribute band, rocked the town with the music of the famous singer. Instead of it being a hot August night, it was a temperate one with a gentle breeze wending its way in and out of the huge crowd that had come to listen to Diamond familiar tunes like "Sweet Caroline," "Crunchy Granola Suite," "Sing Sung Blues" and "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show."

According to the weather people on the various TV stations, we are headed for one of the coolest Julys in recent recorded history. Guess Mother Nature just knew some of us were loving that "June gloom" and just kept giving us extra servings. It was cool enough early Monday morning for me to dig out my fuzzy slippers because my feet were cold — who ever heard of that in July? So, for now I'm quite happy with our overcast mornings. . Even though we have been in the glooms in the a.m., by the time we reach the p.m. the day has warmed up sufficiently to give us balmy nights.

Here in La Cañada Flintridge we were showing our patriotism with many families honoring our nation's 234th birthday by flying their flags. It was really lovely to see "Old Glory" decorating so many people's houses. Of course I get a little more revved up about this holiday because I have at least nine ancestors who fought for our freedom in the American Revolutionary War. Because of my extensive research I know which battles they fought in. In some cases I have copies of documents where they have recounted their war experiences and the officers and other soldiers they fought with.

It was a starry night and a nearly full moon was reflected in the backyard swimming pool as guests gathered on the patio of the mountain top home of Becky and Chuck Gelhaar for the recent La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Assn. Happy Hour event. More than 80 people noshed on the huge spread of hors d'ouvres brought by guests and sipped beverages poured by bartenders for the evening Bob Wallace and Tony Riewe . Besides exchanging news about who was going where for their summer vacation the main topic was how the progress of our city's float, "3-2-1 DIG!"

L ast week was a bonanza for musical theater aficionados with the opening of two major Broadway revivals. I have always been amazed at the breadth of the services that are available in our area?s churches in the days surrounding Holy Week and preceding Easter, with Easter itself a day chock-full of activities. Looking at last year?s Holy Week and Easter Sunday services list, we had choral passions and baptism by candlelight, presented by St. George?s Episcopal Church; a telling of the Passion story involving the people of the church, presented by La Cañada United Methodist; a self-guided spiritual journey and Easter Sunday services on a hill behind Descanso Gardens presented by La Cañada Presbyterian; and six Masses at St. Bede?
