When Pat Anderson, chief executive and president of the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce, learned she'd been named Kiwanis Club's 2013 "La Cañadan of the Year," she was a little more than surprised. Although, as a past president, Anderson serves on the selection committee for the annual leadership and volunteerism award, she had no idea she was being considered for the title. "At first I thought, 'How can that be?'" Anderson said of her reaction to the news. "I'm part of the selection committee, and we hadn't met to select anybody.

WOW! Was it hot enough for you this weekend? Wouldn’t you know with this record-breaking heat wave my air conditioner decided it was taking a vacation. On Sunday evening at 12:30 a.m. when I went to bed, my house was 92 degrees and when I woke up on Monday morning at 7 a.m. it was 85 degrees. Goodness, gracious, I know it is only May but I was praying for an early June gloom. Thank goodness, after calling about 10 air conditioning businesses, I finally found somebody who could come out to fix the shuddering hunk of machinery.

It seems to be the running joke at La Cañada Congregational Church: the Rev. Skip Lindeman has been the interim pastor for the last seven years . It was supposed to be a position the former broadcaster was to have held for only a few months, but he ended up staying for almost a decade. If I didn?t know any better, I?d say the Central Association of the Southern California Nevada Conference of the United Church of Christ, La Cañada Congregational Church?s governing body, just said, ?

The proposition concerns eminent domain, barring state and local governments from condemning or damaging private property to promote other projects or uses. Critics have claimed that although they agree there must be eminent domain reform, Prop.

Foothill Boulevard is filling up again. After a few years of recession-induced vacancies along the boulevard, La Cañada Flintridge is welcoming the arrival of new businesses in 2011 that are bringing the Foothill vacancy rate down. With the recently opened MD Appliances, and with Sprouts Farmers Market and Jane's Cakes opening later this year, the vacancy rate on Foothill is dropping. According to Robert Stanley, the city's director of community development, of the almost 300 units of non-residential property of Foothill Boulevard, the current vacancy rate has dropped below 10%. But when including properties that are in the permitting process or already are permitted but not completed, like the Sprouts market, the rate drops to around 6%. A 6% vacancy rate would put La Cañada Flintridge in line with, or ahead of, the vacancy rates in neighboring cities such as Pasadena.

Right on schedule we are having a mixed bag of weather to usher in this new season. A little bit of June gloom and a dash of early summer seems to be the right concoction for spring. It was more on the summer evening side when more than 90 “Floaters” gathered at the home of Barbara Marshall last Friday when she hosted the LCF Tournament of Roses Association’s March Happy Hour. True to the format that makes everyone happy there was a lavish display of hors d’oeuvres and desserts to taste and a variety of libations to whet a whistle.
