Amy Cheney, Daryl Key, Ashley Loveless, and Sarah Maize were presented scholarships from Cañada Auxiliary of Professionals (CAP) of Assistance League of Flintridge. Fran Evans, scholarship chairman, announced the scholarships at the June 15 meeting. Amy Cheney's scholarship is applicable to Pasadena Community College and she is planning a major in culinary arts with a minor in business. While attending high school she placed in the Rotary Club Culinary Arts competition, served in the St. Bede's Skidette organization which prepares and delivers lunches for homeless people at various shelters in downtown Los Angeles, received the Spartan Spirit Award while on the frosh/soph basketball and softball teams, was co-captain for girls' JV basketball team and was a member of Interact and Smile clubs.

The holidays may be over for most people, but workers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge are planning one last musical hurrah. The JPL Chorus will perform holiday songs at their second free winter concert at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7 with the Donald Brinegar Singers at Pasadena City College's Westerbeck Recital Hall. The chorus, made up of around 50 scientists, engineers, and other JPL workers, formed in 2012. Many of the members have a background in music and two engineers composed and arranged pieces for the concert.

Talks spotlight long-lasting rovers With the Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity marking five years on what were originally expected to be three-month missions, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory has scheduled special events. Mission leaders will give free presentations on the rover programs tonight in Beckman Auditorium on the Caltech campus and Friday in Vosloh Forum at Pasadena City College, with tonight’s event streamed live online and archived at www.jpl.nasa.gov for later viewing.

The Cañada Auxiliary of Professionals of Assistance League of Flintridge , known as CAP, is offering two scholarships to further the education of La Cañada Flintridge resident students. Two $1000 CAP Scholarships will be granted to students who will be attending a two-year college or occupational program in the fall of 2007. To qualify for the scholarship, the applicants must reside in the city of La Cañada Flintridge having a 91011 zip code. Applicants must have graduated from high school by June 2007, and must have maintained a grade point average of 2.5 or better.

A five-goal effort in the first quarter of a nonleague game against visiting Mira Costa at Pasadena City College last Saturday enabled the La Cañada High boys' varsity water polo team to come up with a 12-8 victory. The Spartans led 5-2 after the first quarter, 6-3 and the half and 10-6 after three quarters. Seniors Doug McNeese and Jordan Thompson led La Cañada in scoring with three goals each. Contributing two goals apiece were senior Gamal Rady and junior Devon Borisoff.

The La Cañada High girls' varsity tennis team began the 2005 season in an auspicious way by knocking out visiting Hoover, 16-2, last Thursday in its nonleague opener. Improving to 1-0, the Spartans hosted Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy on Monday and traveled to Pasadena City College to play Pasadena Poly yesterday (Wednesday), but results were not available. The Spartans will host Crescenta Valley today (Thursday) and Hart next Tuesday at the La Cañada Country Club and visit Burbank next Thursday in 3:15 p.m. nonleague matches.

Participating in the Menlo Tournament last weekend in San Francisco, the La Cañada varsity water polo team finished 2-2 to wind up in sixth place in the event. The Spartans defeated Burlingame, 8-2, lost to Atherton Sacred Heart, 6-5, squashed Soqeul, 17-8, and fell to Mountain View St. Francis, 14-10. La Cañada (3-2) played El Toro there on Tuesday, but no results were available at press time. The Spartans will play Long Beach Millikan there today (Thursday). The varsity will also compete in the Newport Harbor Tournament today through Saturday.
