Last week an area newspaper asked its readers if they thought La Canada Flintridge should buy the 30 acres of Metropolitan Water District surplus land for sale in Hahamongna. Since the city of Pasadena has already submitted a purchase offer to Metropolitan for the land, an equally interesting question might be: what does Pasadena plan to do with the land if they are successful in buying it? Pasadena Mayor Bogaard and City Manager Cynthia Kurtz have both stated publicly that Pasadena will not evict Rose Bowl Riders and Tom Sawyer Camp, two well-loved La Cañada institutions which have been located on the property for decades.

Classic and Contemporary American Plays, in association with Glendale's legendary Alex Theatre, presents the staged reading of "Eastern Standard" by Tony Award-winning and Pulitzer Prize-nominated playwright Richard Greenberg on Oct. 18, 19 and 20 at the Alex Theatre. "Eastern Standard" stars Hill Harper, Matt Letscher, Tracy Leigh, Zilah Mendoza and Jordan Belfi. Set in 1980s Manhattan, "Eastern Standard" deals with yuppies, AIDS, the stock market, trendy restaurants, homelessness and urban malaise.

Soap box racers will test the limits of their cars in the Annual Greater Los Angeles All-American Soap Box Derby races this Saturday at 10 a.m. on Michigan Hill. The VIP races will feature local officials, such as Mayor Laura Olhasso, La Cañadans of the Year Meredith and Tom Reynolds and La Cañada Community Center President-elect Joel Smith. ?Challenge races? will also be available for children, and final sign-ups and car inspections for that will be at St. Francis in the parking garage at 5 p.m. Entry fee is $45. ?

The cost over runs at the new District Office have convinced me that we need Joel Peterson on our School Board to keep this from happening again. A lower priority project, originally budgeted for $1.5 M, is now at $2.7M and they aren't finished yet! This is a simple office building for 17 administrators (not students). What happened? Last year, Joel was on the committee to review the district properties to help the school board make good decisions when spending the $25M bond money.

Sr. McCormick's piece on behalf of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy (“ Moving Forward with the Mission ,” October 4) is an excellent example of when words don't match deeds. Despite her assertions that FSHA wants to be a “good neighbor,” only a select few of us living near the school received one, and only one, bare-bones flier in September of this year - long after FSHA began filing for its massive construction plans for the hilltop campus. And while McCormick insists the school will keep its buildings at “the relative same height,” FSHA is requesting approval for a new, 80-foot-tall auditorium.

The following crime reports for La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta and Montrose were provided by the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station. Sunday, April 9 Residents of a house in the 500 block of Paulette Place, La Cañada reported money was stolen from their unlocked vehicle when it was parked in the street. Friday, April 7 Person(s) kicked open and damaged two interior doors at La Cañada Methodist Church at 104 Berkshire Place, La Cañada.

  California Youth Ballet Presents Snow Queen — Dec. 21-23. Show times are 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 21 and 22 and matinee performances at 2 p.m. on Dec. 22 and Dec. 23. Veterans perform their last show before going pro, international guest performer and special effects highlight this year’s show. This year’s production marks the 10th annual presentation of a great holiday fairy tale. For three days, Friday through Sunday, Dec. 21 -23, Snow Queen is performed at the Glendale Community College’s theater, 1500 N. Verdugo Road.
