There is an incredible amount of celebrity gossip in the media recently. From Anna Nicole Smith's drama to Brittany Spears' challenges. Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Sponge Bob are all subject of rumors and innuendo. An unlikely source of much of the hot gossip that's on the news has been traced back to a unlikely location just south of La Cañada High School. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, and the Frisbee players in Hahamonga Park, this innocuous business is a hotbed of information trafficking.

Our family is a cross cultural American family. Different religions. Different political parties. But we all love one another. A few years ago, we acquired a red, white and blue toy donkey, and a red, white and blue toy elephant. Depending on our moods, they are posed, with the donkey sitting on the elephant or the elephant kicking the donkey. Our country is also cross cultural. That?s why both John McCain and Barack Obama have disowned the negative personal attacks on the candidates and their families.

TV comedy writer and area resident Jeff Corriveau has turned to print media. This week, he's making his debut in the Valley Sun with his comic strip, "Deflocked." "Ever since I was a kid, I'd always liked comic strips," said Corriveau. The strip chronicles the adventures and mishaps of four outcasts: Mamet, Cobb, Rupert, and Tucker. Every week, readers will see just what happens when you mix up a cynical sheep, two dogs, and an 8-year old boy as they all tackle the absurdities of daily life.

I was still at the coffee place. The Anonymous Source, an attractive lady in her 40s, had come and gone, leaving behind a folder full of news clippings. Hundreds of them. Yellowed with age. Paris Hilton was lucky she was prosecuted by Rocky Delgadillo and not by Asa Keyes. In his five years as district attorney of Los Angeles, Asa Keyes sent 4,030 men and women to California prisons "for every variety of crime." He had a great career until the day he was charged with taking bribes.

"Many heroes lived before Agamemnon … but they are all un-mourned … and consigned to oblivion … because they had no bard to sing their praises." Quintus Horatius Flaccus, the Roman lyric poet cited above, reminds us that such is the tragedy of the temper of the world that we slight our heroes to obscurity. The vacuous tendencies of pop culture takes us from that which is the tonic of our own preservation. Instead, we have sold our souls to the worship of celebrity in lieu of the veneration of the children of the gods, our heroes.

Some of California's most beautiful and least developed countryside can be found in Pluma County, about an hour's drive west from Reno — which happens to be where we found a real-life version of the movie "City Slickers" at Greenhorn Creek Guest Ranch. Sometimes you just know when you've come home. Within about 30 minutes of our arrival at Greenhorn, we were chowing down on their Friday night barbecue of scrumptious, fall-off-the-bone ribs with all the fixings. The owners of the ranch, Trish and Ralph Wilburn, were strumming their guitars and singing western songs by the campfire.

It?s almost a case of a local guy makes good. If you take out of the equation the part where he?s already been an established television comedy writer for such shows as Saturday Night Live, Talk Soup and the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. And, though he has lived in Montrose and the Crescenta Valley for the past 12 years, he grew up next to the cornfields and dairy farms of western Massachusetts. But, La Cañada and the Crescenta Valley are still ready to claim this talented 38-year-old who took his locally spawned comic strip to new heights this week.

Fire Up The Grill Sometimes, when I am interviewing, my subject says, "You won't mention that, will you?" Or she tells me something funny and adds, "That's off the record." I nod politely, thinking to myself that I've just waved good-bye to an amusing tidbit. One day I asked myself, "If you were interviewed, Lynn, what personal topic would you want to avoid?" Boy, is this one silly. I have a thing about my feet. I don't like them. They make me nervous. As a child I was afraid to go barefoot.
