The choirs of St. Bede the Venerable and members of the L.A. Chamber Orchestra and Opera Orchestra will present a St. Bede Birthday Concert on Sept. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at 215 Foothill Blvd. Anthony Lupica, music director and conductor, will lead the concert, accompanied by Barbara Klump. The event will feature the music of Vivaldi and Mozart, including Gloria, Exsultate, jubilate, K. 165 and Regina coeli, K. 276. Singers will include Lisa Abel, soprano, Rhonda Dillon, alto, Wes Morrow, tenor and Edwin Kan, bass.

Segil Fine Art will host a special event with Brenda Swenson an, award winning artist and author, on Sat., Aug. 19 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.. Swenson will demonstrate the art of water color painting. Observe the intimacy of the medium and the way it encourages inventiveness that seems to record the artist's fleeting thoughts on paper. There will be time for an open forum discussion about this most unpredictable, alluring and luminescent of mediums. Brenda Swenson's work will be on display at the gallery, and light refreshments will be served.

The future of Camp Fox on Catalina Island will be the topic of a public forum to be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, at the Crescenta-Cañada YMCA, 1930 Foothill Blvd. Thousands of local youngsters have attended Camp Fox over the past years. Now the YMCA will discuss the future of the camp as well as plans for other camping programs they are currently looking at, new camps they plan to introduce during 2007 and new camp structures. There will be time for the public to ask questions during the forum.

In response to the Rev. Bryan Griem's answer to last Sunday's In Theory question, “Should churches be able to support candidates?”: Instead of taking a partisan position, it would seem more feasible to offer the congregational an open forum or a debate highlighting both parties positions on the major issues. Griem doesn't comment on Romney's Mormon faith but casts doubts on the incumbent's “professed Christian” faith. Mr. Obama says that he is a Christian and it is a matter of record that he attended a church in Chicago for many years.

Republicans Meet to Discuss Current Issues Local members of the La Cañada Flintridge Republican Club met this past Monday at Magpie's Restaurant for their regular monthly meeting. In a departure from their regular meetings which typically feature a speaker on some subject of general interest to members, this meeting was an open forum where all of the members had an opportunity to discus issues of current interest. Facilitated by Secretary/Treasurer David Stassel, the members had a wide ranging discussion on the subject of illegal immigration and the current legislation before the House of Representatives which would make illegal entry into Untied States a felony and impose heavy fines on employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens.
