This post has been updated. See note below. Right after Yom Kippur, we headed to our country's Naval Academy on a red-eye flight, or, as Virgin America puts it, “a midnight journey.” The stars were bright as we crossed the country. The next day, on Thursday, we attended the Stockdale lecture, named after Admiral James B. Stockdale and held on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy. Stockdale received the Medal of Honor for his conduct as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam.

The hospital is different from all others. The staff is more dedicated because they view the patients as family. The patients are young, otherwise healthy, with strength of will. A few days into his third deployment, as a member of Seal Team One, Lt. Dan Cnossen stepped on a pressure plate IED. The device was underground and was designed to be activated when someone stepped on it. The Taliban generally surrounds the mine with rusty metal and human excrement to increase the risk of infection.

Last Thursday was a great day. In the morning, the Valley Sun was distributed. My friends at the La Cañada Thursday Club immediately read my column and learned that I borrow my daughter's makeup. They quickly arranged for a beauty "make over." Kim from Merle Norman had also read the column. She arrived at the Thursday Club with two satchels of makeup and her sister, Kris. They suggested that I discontinue products such as "Lip Venom" and "Hard Candy," because these products dry out elderly lips.

Len and I spent last Sunday morning helping hundreds of totally cute children write enclosure letters for Operation Gratitude (www.operationgratitude.com) care packages. We did this, of course, at Adat Ari El Synagogue in nearby Valley Village. A lot of the kids began their letters with “Dear Soldier.” My job was to suggest other salutations. I told the kids that “Dear Servicemember” or “Dear Troops” or “Dear Hero” would include all branches of service.

La Cañada Flintridge resident Andrew Torres was a member of the U.S. Naval Academy's Class of 2002, which was preparing for a military career when the 9/11 terror strikes occurred. Many of his classmates went on to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan. But Torres ended up fighting his battle at home. During that school year, Torres was diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer. He died in April 2004 at age 23. Torres' courageous effort to complete his studies and carry on is now chronicled in a book capturing the wide range of experiences of the Naval Academy Class of 2002, “In the Shadow of Greatness: Voices of Leadership, Sacrifice and Service from America's Longest War.” The chapter was written by his mother, Valley Sun columnist Anita Brenner, with the help of his sister, Rachel Torres.

Tom Fry, a Flintridge Preparatory School teacher and football coach, died last week at the age of 52 following a battle with cancer. A devastating loss,it is hard to find the words. Andrew Zwerner (Prep Class of ’98) explains: “Coach Fry was one of the most influential figures in my whole life. Those who knew him could tell stories about him for days. This always sounds so generic, but he was truly one-of-a-kind.” Thomas Wirt Fry grew up in west La Cañada.

Seven years after his first wife, Mary, died of cancer, Glendale school board member and past president Chakib ?Chuck? Sambar, a resident of La Cañada Flintridge, is facing the disease again with his current wife, Lois. But, though he calls it a ?terrible, tragic disease,? Sambar is hopeful for the future and confident strides in cancer research have progressed in recent years. Those strides are a direct result of public support through donations and participation in fund-raising efforts, such as the upcoming Foothills Relay for Life, Sambar said.
