The beautiful La Cañada home of Jan Hotchkin was the site of the National Charity League Inc., Glendale Chapter's President's Open House and Holiday this past Sunday, Nov. 5. All proceeds will benefit NCL philanthropies. Joy Young and Jan Hotchkin co- chaired this festive event. Featured merchandise included fine linens, distinctive clothing, hand painted Christmas ornaments, custom handbags and accessories, handmade jewelry and calendars, kitchen utensils, aromatic candles and unique holiday decorations.

The Mothers and Daughters of National Charity League, Inc., Glendale Chapter, were treated to an inspiring presentation by acclaimed speaker, author, and television personality Dr. Dale Atkins, who shared her tips for balanced living in today's busy world, at their February 8 meeting. NCL President Vikki Mele was honored to have Dr. Dale share observations and advice from her newest book, "Sanity Savers: Tips for Women to Lead a Balanced Life." Dr Dale, as she is known to audiences across America, calls on 25 years of experience as a psychologist to help women cope with life's challenges, from the light hearted to life challenging.

Celebrating at a festive brunch held at the lovely La Cañada home of Jeanne McLaughlin, incoming president Vikki Mele thanked the ladies who have volunteered to serve on the 2006-07 board.   Erica Eddleman of Shen Life in Montrose presented a holistic approach to relationships to the Class of 2008 Glendale Chapter of the National Charity League Inc. Eddleman said having the supportive information to investigate relationships more clearly is the key. She said how people feel about their relationships to people, places or things turns into what's real in their hearts, minds and bodies. She told the audience life isn't happening like a conspiracy based on the external world, but actually life reflects what's going on inwardly.

The Glendale chapter of the National Charity League helped to provide college-bound foster children with dorm-room essentials. The organization partnered with United Friends of the Children to support 40 students who are set to attend four-year universities. The students picked out their items during a “shopping party,” which included comforters, bed sheets, towels, laundry bags and shower caddies. “It was an eye-opening experience to see the smiles on the students' faces as they shopped,” said Melissa Horner in a statement.

National Charity League Inc., Glendale Chapter honored its high school senior members, the Ticktocker Class of 2007, at the Huntington Ritz Carlton in Pasadena on Saturday, March 10. The annual senior presentation is held in recognition of the many hours these young women have dedicated to community service through National Charity League during their six years as Ticktockers. The twenty-eight young women honored included Naceam Abyane, Christina Barsamian, Rachel Bushman, Julia Bywater, Ashlee Chan, Lisa Cramoline, Melissa Curtis, Kelley Fox, Molly Gallagher, Jacquelyn Gorsh, Rachel Hahn, Lacy Hannah, Diane Kerchof, Ashley Kokawa, Elizabeth Lazier, Margaret Malloy, Cassandra Mele, Kristen Oechsel, Elizabeth Ortiz, Christina Penido, Tessa Plaschke, Rebecca Powell, Keaton Ray, Courtney Sarian, Marika Schulhof, Kjirsten Speer, Rebecca Springer and Sara Wolff.

David Brown speaks at NCL luncheon David Brown , executive director of Descanso Gardens Inc. was the guest speaker at the National Charity League Inc., Glendale Chapter Annual Luncheon, held Jan. 17 at La Cañada Flintridge Country Club. Brown spoke about the garden?s history, telling the group ?We are all gardeners now,? and asking each one to think about our place as part of the natural world. National Charity League strives to foster mother-daughter relationships in a philanthropic organization dedicated to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences.

The first weekend of spring just whizzed by. With the heavy early morning cloud cover, the weather people commented that we were experiencing either June gloom or May gray. Absolutely nobody mentioned April showers. Our parched earth would have welcomed that forecast. Yes, water conservation is ever present in my mind. I have reluctantly given up my long hot showers - I'm singing short songs these days. --- The spring social season is in full swing and love is also in the air. The Valley Sun got a note from Debbie Bacino saying that she will be married in April.

La Cañada Flintridge residents Janet Hotchkin-Tinoco and Anthony Portantino have been appointed to Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services' Governing and Advisory boards, respectively. A retired special education teacher who served with both the Covina-Valley and the La Cañada unified school districts, Hotchkin-Tinoco has long been an active volunteer. Her other affiliations include La Cañada Girl Scouts, National Charity League of Glendale, Pasadena Jaycee Women, and Pasadena Tournament of Roses.

Eight women from the Glendale Chapter of National Charity League Inc. recently attended the mother-daughter organization's Fall District IV Meeting and leadership conference in Yorba Linda. According to Debbie Cox, president of NCL Glendale Inc., the meeting underscored the importance of social responsibility and volunteerism as practiced by the dozen NCL Chapters in District IV. In the 2010-11 fiscal year alone, NCL Inc. District IV members, including those from the Glendale Chapter, volunteered a cumulative total of 123,000 hands-on hours with local charities, valued at almost $2.5 million in manpower hours.
