Mountain Avenue Elementary School students, many of whom were evacuated from their homes last week, were still able to dance and sing their way through Camelot on Saturday, Jan. 23 as they staged a musical theatre production of “King Arthur’s Quest” in partnership with the Missoula Children’s Theatre Program. With only one week to rehearse the show, it was almost cancelled when authorities closed the school on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday and they had no site to practice at. Crescenta Valley High School was able to offer their cafeteria after school and with only 12 hours of rehearsal, these 60 students performed two one-hour performances on Saturday, Jan. 23 at Roosevelt Middle School to a packed audience.

The Stepping Stone Players, Glendale's "Community Theatre At Its Best," is pleased to announce the selection of three-time Tony© award-winner "Oliver" as their eighth annual production for 2007. Based on the famous novel, Oliver Twist, by Charles Dickens, Oliver first opened in London and went on to Broadway where it was revived several times due to popular demand. Oliver tells the tale of a poor orphan boy, who, surrounded by a fascinating cast of characters, goes from rags to riches and back again.

The Stepping Stone Players, Glendale's community theatre group, will soon present the Tony-award winning musical, "West Side Story." Nine performances are scheduled for September with two Sunday matinee performances that will have American Sign Language interpretation. Now in their fifth season, the troupe continues to attract both deaf and hearing audiences to their "near Broadway quality" performances of popular Broadway musical shows. The Stepping Stone Players is a nonprofit Glendale-based community theater group with the vision to inspire a sense of community by encouraging the participation of people of all ages and backgrounds in their annual production.

Glendale's legendary Alex Theatre announced the winners of the "Meet Alex" essay writing contest.  The five winners, Fred Judkins of Burbank; Patty Paul of Studio City; Robert Rustigian of Glendale; Charlene Lockhart of La Crescenta and Andy Atwater of Glendale will have their name displayed on the Alex Theatre Marquee, receive two tickets to the Oct. 1 Alex Theatre presentation of the Balet Folclorico da Bahia, and dinner for two at Porter's Prime...

The award-winning Musical Theatre Guild, a company of professional performers who present concert-staged readings of seldom seen musicals, will continue its 11th season with an 80th Anniversary staging of the 1927 Rodgers and Hart musical, A Connecticut Yankee . The opening performance will take place on Monday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the Alex Theatre in Glendale. An additional performance, in association with Musical Theatre West, will take place on Monday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m. at the Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach.

Ballet Petit Performing Arts Center announces its First Annual February Arts Festival to be held on Saturday, Feb. 24 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 25 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Festival will be at the Performing Arts Center, located at 457 Foothill Blvd. in La Cañnada. The weekend will be filled with song and dance performances featuring members of the resident Ballet, Tap and Musical Theatre Companies at the Performing Arts Center. For the children, there will be face painting and a bubble extravaganza.

Auditions for the Glendale Community College spring theatre productions will be held on Jan. 9, 10, 16 and 17 in the Auditorium Mainstage Theatre. Auditions for William Inge's "Bus Stop" are on Tuesday, Jan. 9 and Wednesday, Jan. 10 from 7 to 10 p.m. The auditions are by cold readings from the script. "Bus Stop" opens March 1. Those cast in the production must enroll in the winter session modern theatre workshop and either a costume or backstage lab course. Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Oklahoma!"

A chance to take the family to see a favorite Broadway musical with adult performers for only $20 a ticket is being offered on the first and second weekends of February at La Cañada's own Lanterman Auditorium at 4490 Cornishon Ave., La Canada, on the corner of Foothill Boulevard and Cornishon across from See's Candy. Performances are Friday, Feb. 3, 8 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 4., 8 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 5 matinee at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11 matinee at 2 p.m. and also an evening performance at 8 p.m. Opportunity prizes, including one from the popular Pampered Chef collection will be offered from "Eliza's Flower Shop" in the Lanterman Auditorium lobby.
