State Assemblyman Mike Eng (D-Monterey Park) offered his support for a study of a tunnel extending the Long Beach (710) Freeway on Sunday, countering a letter Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) sent to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority late last week. Eng's district includes Alhambra, which has long supported plans to extend the 710 to the Foothill (210) Freeway in Pasadena. The 710 now ends at Valley Boulevard, leading to heavy traffic on surface streets in Alhambra.

Ninety young musicians from all over the Southland auditioned in April for the opportunity to perform with The Pasadena POPS Orchestra in September as part of the Side-By-Side-By-Symphony 2007 program. "This was the largest number of students we've ever seen at auditions for this program. We were thrilled, but it made our job more difficult," says Director of Education Jane McEneaney. Of the auditioning students, 29 won the opportunity to perform at "Aren't We A Pair" on September 7, 8 and 9 at Descanso Gardens.

City Council member Steve Del Guercio on Monday evening made a pitch to La Cañada Flintridge residents to attend a community meeting on the State Route-710 Tunnel Technical Study, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 26 in Lanterman Auditorium. The proposed tunnel would close the Long Beach (710) Freeway gap, which exists between Alhambra and Pasadena and has been the subject of much debate for decades. Del Guercio took the opportunity at the end of the regular council meeting to invite locals viewing the council?

Last week's E-ticket was the Gelson's La Cañada grand opening in Plaza de La Cañada . By 9 a.m. there was a line around the store. The crowds continued throughout the day, with shopper parking as far as one block away. You could almost feel the spirit of Bernie Gelson. In an 2005 interview with the Daily News, Jack Brown, then chair of the Stater Brothers groceries, explained that Bernie Gelson was a people person. “Bernie saw the customers as guests in his home. It was his way of life.” In that spirit, the La Cañada store was well-staffed for the opening day crowds.

Each year members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department pay tribute by staging a Memorial Run in honor of officers who have perished in the line of duty.The run starts at Sheriff's Headquarters Building in Monterey Park and consists of 56 legs, five to ten miles long, and travels to each sheriff's station in a circuit totaling 313 miles. Local residents may have seen deputies from the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station running along Angeles Crest Highway and Foothill midday last Sunday as they paid tribute to their comrades who gave all. The Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Support Group is currently raising funds to build a memorial to two local heroes who sacrificed their lives while protecting others.

Sally and John Spence of La Cañada Flintridge have announced the engagement of their daughter Melissa Anne Spence to Vincent Michael Gonzales. The bride-to-be attended La Cañada Elementary School, Palm Crest Elementary School, La Cañada 7/8, and graduated from La Cañada High School in 1998. She graduated from Occidental College in 2002 and received a master's degree in special education from Boston College in 2006. She now works as a special education teacher for Los Angeles Unified School District.

With the Air Force announcing it no longer needs its fleet of C-27J cargo planes, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank), today joined other members of Congress in introducing a new bill to transfer 14 planes to the U.S. Forest Service to fight wildfires. The bill, the Wildfire Suppression Aircraft Act of 2012, is a companion bill to a Senate measure introduced by  Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Bill Nelson (D-Fla). Since the 2009 Station fire scorched 160,000 acres on the edge of the San Gabriel Mountains, Schiff has pressed the U.S. Forest Service to develop night flying capabilities.

State Sen. Carol Liu (D-La Cañada Flintridge) on Tuesday called for regional transportation officials to eliminate consideration of a tunnel extending the Long Beach (710) Freeway to Pasadena, becoming the latest to lawmaker to stake out a position in an increasingly hot debate. Liu on Tuesday wrote to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, asking that the tunnel option be tossed from the MTA's on-going environmental report on closing the 710 gap. Despite the heavy rains and evacuations the day before, area residents turned out for the American Red Cross? Fourth Annual Battle of the Badges blood drive held at the Crescenta Valley Sheriff?s Station Tuesday. The Battle of the Badges is a month-long blood donation drive, held by the Red Cross, pitting the Los Angeles County Sheriff?s Department against the Los Angeles County Fire and Los Angeles Police departments and other law enforcement agencies to see who can get the most donations.

La Cañada Flintridge Mayor Dave Spence is optimistic about the future for the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments, over which he will preside for the coming year. "I think we're in better shape now than we have been for the past year and a half," Spence said of the regional government group, which has survived some major governance and financial issues. The COG includes some 31 cities and three seats for county supervisors with substantial unincorporated areas in the county, Mike Antonovich, Don Knabe and Gloria Molina.
