Art, literature and music will combine Saturday night at Vida Verde, Foothill Boulevard’s eco-friendly boutique, and at neighboring Foothill Bookstore, as local artisans join forces to raise money for the One in Eight breast cancer awareness project. One in Eight is a photography book currently being compiled by local breast cancer survivor Devon Williams, of La Crescenta, together with the Pasadena Arts Council. The book is a tribute to the beauty of the women who have been scarred by breast cancer.

A crayon, a Mona Lisa with a young girl's head poking through the frame, a feline and other curiosities made their appearances during the 25th annual Halloween Haunt at La Cañada Elementary School on Saturday, taking part in a bash that raises money for school programs. In addition to the costume contest, youngsters enjoyed games and rides and their parents placed bids for auction items. The proceeds will help cover costs for accelerated reading and math programs, the school maintenance fund and more.

The Chinese New Year has plodded in on big hooves because it is the year of the Earth Ox. The soothsayers proclaim that the Chinese sign of the Ox evokes stability and dependability. The Ox is a practical work animal, while the Earth element is steady and firm. Together, they create a kind of slow and deliberate energy that can be exasperating. Still, progress will be made in the Year of the Earth Ox; it will occur in slow, barely perceptible increments. If you stay patient and keep your nose to the grindstone, you will make the most of this ponderous energy.

I had a play date with my daughter, Heather, on Mother's Day weekend, a fun escape to San Francisco. On Saturday, the morning fog blanketed the city and the foghorns called out their mournful cry, giving the city such an eerie feeling. Just as the fog lifted and the sun peeked out, we made our way to beautiful Golden Gate Park and the de Young Museum. Our destination was the exquisite and famed painting, "The Girl with the Pearl Earring" by Johannes Vermeer. I have loved this painting ever since I first studied it in art history in college.
