MANHATTAN BEACH - With all the postseason implications, it made sense there was a playoff feel to a La Cañada and Mira Costa high boys' water polo matchup Saturday. Playoff positioning was on the line when two of the top three teams in CIF Southern Section Division III met at Mira Costa. For the third-ranked Spartans, there was a chance to take back the No. 2 seat it held in the preseason division rankings with a win over the Mustangs, the current No. 2 team. Plenty of chances were there for La Cañada, but three-goal outbursts from a pair of Mira Costa players and an inability to cash in on its man advantage proved the difference in the Mustangs' 12-6 win. In total, the Spartans shot 30 percent (three of-10)

It was a great story; a blown-up play turns into a goal with four seconds left in the match to give a team a 5-4 victory in the second round of the playoffs. Unfortunately for the La Cañada boys' water polo team, playing against Mira Costa, the Spartans came out on the losing end of the story. The Mustangs squeaked out the one-goal win at their home pool during the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division IIIAA playoffs on Friday to advance to the semifinals. "I knew it was going to be a defensive battle.

EL SEGUNDO - While there wasn't much to celebrate about in the ending of the La Cañada High club hockey team's season, a simple look back gave the Spartans plenty to smile about. For the first time in seven years, the Spartans qualified for the playoffs as the third seed out of a club high school league team that plays at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo. “This is only the second or third time we've ever made the playoffs and we've gone years without winning a single game in the season,” said La Cañada Coach KC Mathews, who's coached the team for 12 years and benefited from a squad filled with eight seniors.

BOYS' WATER POLO La Cañada 11, Mira Costa 10: The Spartans held a four point, 10-6, lead with six minutes to go and it proved to just be enough to hold off the Mustangs in a CIF Southern Section Division III showdown with plenty of playoff implications Saturday night at Pasadena City College. “They made a good run and pulled it to within 11-10 with two minutes left and we were able to hold on and win the game,” La Cañada Coach Devon Borisoff said.

It was a battle, but the Spartans overcame a tough opponent on Monday evening at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach to win the CIF Southern Section Division III Championship. La Cañada (26-7) outlasted an old and worthy foe, the Montebello Oilers, 14-11, to win their first CIF title since 1999 and their fourth under coach Larry Naeve. It was a revenge win for La Cañada as the Oilers knocked the Spartans out of the playoffs last season in the semifinals. "It feels great to win the title," said Naeve in a telephone interview.

PALMDALE — At the end of one long incredible game, it came down to one final stop. But inevitably, it was a contest that showed just how quickly momentum, a game and a season can turn. St. Francis High’s football team, having led on two occasions by two touchdowns, finished its season on the wrong end of an improbable 49-42 double-overtime loss to host Palmdale on a cold Friday night in the quarterfinal round of the CIF Southern Section Western Division playoffs.

MANHATTAN BEACH — All of the CIF and state championship banners on the wall didn’t intimidate the members of the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy volleyball team. However, the Tologs found out quickly how good Mira Costa is and why it earned that plethora of titles. “We came in with the mindset to not be intimidated,” said Sacred Heart senior middle blocker Mary Schroeder, whose team suffered a 25-6, 25-16, 25-11 road loss to third-seeded Mira Costa on Thursday night in CIF Southern Section Division 1-AA second-round match.

The Mira Costa Mustangs came to town last Friday night with some outstanding horses, but offensive miscues and a tenacious Golden Knights' defense sent them packing with a 20-14 CIF Southern Section Division III quarterfinals loss. The Golden Knights' defense forced three Mira Costa turnovers, all of which the St. Francis offense converted into touchdowns. Tomorrow (Friday), the Golden Knights will host three-time defending CIF Champs Sherman Oaks Notre Dame at 7:30 p.m. at Friedman Field in semifinal CIF action.
