Law enforcement officials are on the lookout for two suspects driving a gray Dodge minivan who are suspected of burglarizing three homes--and attempting to burglarize a fourth--this week in La Cañada Flintridge. The suspects, who are described as black males, ages 18-30 and between 5’7” and 5’10” and 190-200 lbs., allegedly broke into the homes through rear entrances by force and grabbed many small high-value items, including jewelry. “We’ve put out extra patrols,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept.

On Thursday, Nov.14, I had the good fortune of being reminded why we live in such a nice town. It was the semiannual heavy item trash disposal day. On the way to dropping my kids off at school, we noticed some pallets that were placed curbside for collection. My son, who has aspirations of building a tree house with his dad, said they might be useful for the project. So, after drop-off, I headed back to retrieve the pallets and attempt to get them into my minivan. As I was clearly struggling with this task, a nice gentleman in a pickup truck stopped and asked if they were going to fit in the minivan, and if I needed some help.

La Cañada Flintridge April 7 800 block of Wiladonda Drive: Attempted vehicle burglary, 2:25 a.m. A man heard his car alarm going off and went outside to find the door of his unlocked Honda minivan open and the alarm on his Honda SUV set off. Nothing was stolen. No suspects were seen. La Crescenta April 9 2400 block of Rockdell Street: Drunk in public, 7:22 p.m. Two 18-year-olds, a boy and a girl, were yelling and screaming at sheriff's deputies, and both gave off a strong smell of alcohol.

La Cañada Flintridge Sept. 3 Identity theft: 300 block of Corona Drive, 9:13 a.m. A woman's PayPal account was used to order a $2,422 Apple laptop computer while she was out of town. The theft was discovered Sept. 17. Sept. 11 Burglary: 4500 block of Leata Lane, before 3:50 p.m. Kitchen door window smashed, four watches and Louis Vuitton purse, reported as worth $7,200 total, stolen from a home. The neighboring home was also burglarized. Two watches and an iPad 2 were taken.

A 76-year-old hiker who was reported missing Monday morning was found dead Monday afternoon in the Switzer Falls campground area of the Angeles National Forest. The body of Richard Derusha, of Bellflower, was located by Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies around 4:25 p.m., L.A. County coroner's officials confirmed. His body was recovered on Tuesday, as darkness prevented a helicopter from being used on Monday night, and the body's location was too remote for it to be carried out by rescue personnel.

At almost the same day and hour every year, there is a group of 30 young women whose adrenaline collectively rises and stays that way for a few minutes. And, at almost the same time every year, there is a group of seven girls out of that group of 30 whose adrenaline collectively rises and stays that way for months afterward. Monday morning, each of the 30 finalists stood on footsteps at the south end of Tournament House leading to a grassy area, facing the various television and newspaper cameras.
