Congressman David Dreier (R) today announced the names of his nominees to the United States Air Force, Military, Naval and Merchant Marine academies. Among the nominees to the numerous institutions, was Paul Park of La Cañada Flintridge to was nominated to attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Other close by nominees include Mark Beeman and Matthew Anderson of Monrovia, Kyle Delahooke and Katharine Leigh Barber of Sierra Madre to the Air Force Academy; Matthew Anderson of Monrovia to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy; Rhett Cory Barke of Altadena, Kyle Delahooke and Kevin Kuhn of Sierra Madre and Spencer Feliciano-Lyons of Arcadia and Jonathon Yenny of Monrovia to the U.S. Naval Academy.

District 26 Congressman David Dreier has announced his annual United States Service Academy Information Night will be at 8 p.m. March 29 at the Arcadia Community Center at 365 Campus Drive in Arcadia. Representatives of the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy will be discussing educational and career opportunities available at the academies as well as the steps involved in the admissions process. The event is open to parents and interested young men and women ages 17 to 23 who are residents of the 26th Congressional District, which includes La Cañada Flintridge.

Joe Layton, son of Tom and Rose Layton of La Cañada Flintridge, who is entering his senior year at Loyola High School, was one of 800 high school students who were invited to participate in the 2005 Summer Leaders Seminar (SLS) held annually in June at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY. Attendees are invited to the workshop based on a competitive basis using the academic, athletic and extracurricular information candidates provided in their SLS application form. The week-long program consists of academic workshops, where each student chooses four of 16 possible classes in various disciplines taught by Academy instructors.

Six local students are among 14 nominated this month by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) for appointments to U.S. service academies for the class of 2018. “Each one of these students has compiled an outstanding resume of accomplishments, excelled in extracurricular activities and sports and demonstrated excellence in academics,” Schiff stated in a news release announcing the nominations. He went on to say he is “confident they will be among the future leaders of our country.” The locals nominated include Shane Michael Bell of Sun Valley, a student at La Cañada High School who was nominated to attend the Merchant Marine Academy; Ricardo Antonio Francia, III, also of Sun Valley, who studies at St. Francis High School, nominated for the Air Force Academy; Joseph Chance Mahler, a Flintridge Prep student who lives in Hollywood Hills, nominated to both the Naval and Merchant Marine academies; Aaron Jeffrey Mellstrom, a La Cañadan who attends La Cañada High School and was nominated to the Military and Air Force academies; Collin Spenser Ramani, a La Cañada Flintridge resident who attends Loyola High School, nominated to the Naval Academy and Henry Keebo Sim of La Cañada Flintridge, a student at Crescenta Valley High School, nominated to the Military Academy.

Lew Allen, a physicist and four-star Air Force general who served as director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory from 1982 to 1990, died Monday in Potomac Falls, Va. He was 84. Colleagues described Allen as a “giant” in the space program, adding that he was widely respected for his technical and strategic judgment. “He was both intellectually and personally just a gem,” said current JPL director Charles Elachi. “It is a great loss.” Born in 1925 in Miami, Allen attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. and went on to an exceptional career in military aviation and science.

On Monday, Congressman Ken Calvert (R-Corona) introduced H.R. 988, a bill that would name a Riverside post office the Lieutenant Todd Jason Bryant Post Office. Bryant, a product of the La Cañada public school system, was killed a little more than three years ago while on active duty in Iraq. His family lives in Riverside. "It is an honor to introduce this bill in memory of Lieutenant Todd Bryant," stated Rep. Calvert. "Todd was one of those rare individuals who distinguished himself at every stage of life.

In 2001, cadets attending the United States Military Academy at West Point witnessed along with the rest of the world, the attack of 9/11. This included a 1998 La Cañada High School graduate, Cadet Todd J. Bryant. During their 2002 commencement ceremony, then-President George W. Bush said in part, ?In your last year America was attacked by a ruthless and resourceful enemy. You graduate from this academy in a time of war.? On Oct. 31, 2003, 2nd Lt. Bryant was killed in Iraq by an improvised explosive device, or IED, as he traveled in a Humvee on the road between Fallujah and Baghdad.

Courtney Louise La Marr-Stewart , a 2001 graduate of La Cañada High School, was a freshman and art major at the College of Santa Fe, New Mexico, when she received a call from her mother to turn on her television set. The date was Sept. 11, 2001, and she proceeded to watch the dramatic and terrifying events unfold along with the rest of the world. That day she placed an American flag outside her dormitory window and enlisted in the United States Navy. After completing her first year of college, she began a journey that has lasted four years and turned a patriotic young college freshman into a strong, independent and disciplined veteran.
