The early “June Gloom” was welcomed by Fiesta Days parade participants and watchers last Monday. The gloom did finally wear off and the sun peeped out, but certainly not as hot as it has been in past parades. I had a different “take” on the parade this year because I was riding IN the parade, perched atop the back seat of an adorable 1951 MG, courtesy of Mike Nichols who owns the car, and the La Cañada Junior Women’s Club who is celebrating its 40th year in the community.

Flintridge Preparatory School students took to the streets on Sept. 25 to raise money for hurricane relief. Katrina Walk, a fundraising event planned and organized by the Class of 2006, drew more than 180 participants, including students, faculty, staff, and parents. Seniors Michelle Corral and Ryan Hawkins, leaders of Prepís Senior Buddies program, originally conceived the fundraiser as a fun and competitive community service activity for the eighth graders they mentor. However, as they worked with faculty advisors Midge Kimble and Peter Vaughn to plan the event, it quickly gained momentum to become a school-wide happening.
