Megan Edwards went the distance for Western Studios against the Burbank Diamonds, giving up 5 hits, in a 6-4 win in Tri-Cities Tournament Junior Softball action. The game went back and forth and Western had to battle until the end as the Burbank Diamonds had bases loaded with no outs in the top of the seventh. The Diamonds coach elected to bunt three straight times to save the victory for the Western girls. On offense, Kylie Mulligan started the game off with a ground rule double.

The surprise season by the La Cañada girls? soccer team ended last Thursday as the girls, who had up to that point miraculously advanced past two teams in the CIF-SS Div. V playoffs, lost to El Segundo, 2-0, in the quarterfinals. La Cañada (16-5-2) ended up doing much better than anyone anticipated them doing at the start of the season. Most people, including some on the team, didn?t believe they?d make the playoffs, but they snagged their third consecutive Rio Hondo league title and made it to the quarterfinals.

Problems continue for the La Cañada varsity softball team as it lost to visiting Monrovia, 6-2, in Rio Hondo League play on March 22. The Spartans, who dropped to 2-5 overall and to 0-1 in league, traveled to South Pasadena yesterday (Wednesday) for a league contest. Results were not available at press time. La Cañada will host Temple City tomorrow (Friday) in a 3:15 p.m. league tussle. Because of spring break, the Spartans will not play again until April 12 when they will visit Temple City.

It's been a long season for the La Cañada varsity softball team. After winning two of their first three games, the Spartans have since lost nine in a row, including a 9-4 defeat to host San Marino on Monday. La Cañada fell to 2-10 overall and to 0-5 in Rio Hondo League play. The Spartans hosted Temple City on Tuesday, but results were available at press time. La Cañada will host South Pasadena today (Thursday) and will travel to San Marino next Wednesday and to South Pasadena next Thursday for 3:30 p.m. league contests.

The Tigers shut out the host Spartans, 3-0, on Monday and out slugged visiting La Cañada, 8-6, last Thursday in Rio Hondo League action. The Spartans, who lost their 11th and 12th consecutive games, fell to 2-13 overall and to 0-8 in league. La Cañada traveled to San Marino yesterday (Wednesday) for a league contest, but results were not available at press time.

With 22 top-five finishes in 32 varsity events at the Rio Hondo league track and field finals, La Cañada has a lot to be proud of. Spartans boys? track and field coach Steve Zimmerman expected this much. ?Our performance did not exceed my expectations,? Zimmerman said, ?because it was clear from the beginning that these kids were here to take care of business and that?s what they did.? Courtney Schulte finished first in the girls? varsity 100-meter dash, 13.15 seconds.

Host Arcadia blanked the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy varsity softball team, 4-0, in nonleague play last Friday to stop the Tologs' two-game winning streak. Sacred Heart fell to 5-5 overall and remains 1-0 in Mission League action. The Tologs hosted West Hills Chaminade in a league contest at the Glendale Sports Complex on Tuesday, but results were not available at press time. Sacred Heart will travel to Mission Hills Alemany tomorrow (Friday) for a 3 p.m. league contest, will host Pasadena Mayfield on Saturday in a 2 p.m. nonleague tussle, will host Alhambra Ramona Convent in a 3:15 p.m. nonleague game on Monday at the GSC and will visit Chaminade next Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. league battle.

The sun was shining on San Marino Tuesday, and a light breeze contributed for ideal weather for a field competition: the Rio Hondo League track and field preliminaries. All six league member teams were represented in the field and in the stands, color blocks of green, red and blue cheering for their team's victory. The La Cañada Spartans had their own spot in the bleachers, and athletes constantly hopped up and down the stairs to head out to the field to compete. Sophomore Peyton Collins excelled at what she does best — hurdles.
