A 56-year-old Valencia man was killed after his vehicle slammed into the back of a parked big rig early Monday morning on the eastbound Foothill (210) Freeway. A 49-year-old Bellflower man died Thursday afternoon from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle collision earlier in the day on the Angeles Crest Highway, the California Highway Patrol reported Friday. The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. when the man's 1993 Mazda sedan was traveling westbound near Mile Post 28.6, about four miles north of Foothill Boulevard. For an unknown reason, the vehicle pulled to the right side of the road, colliding with the rocky hillside and damaging the windshield, right front bumper, fender and wheel, according to a statement from the California Highway Patrol.

La Cañada Flintridge April 7 800 block of Wiladonda Drive: Attempted vehicle burglary, 2:25 a.m. A man heard his car alarm going off and went outside to find the door of his unlocked Honda minivan open and the alarm on his Honda SUV set off. Nothing was stolen. No suspects were seen. La Crescenta April 9 2400 block of Rockdell Street: Drunk in public, 7:22 p.m. Two 18-year-olds, a boy and a girl, were yelling and screaming at sheriff's deputies, and both gave off a strong smell of alcohol.

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy celebrated its 30th Gala at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles on Feb. 11. More than 530 guests including, current and former parents, teachers, and alumnae attended the event. Interestingly, in the late 1920s, the Biltmore Hotel chain operated the building and grounds of Sacred Heart. Sister Celeste Marie Botello, principal, and Sister Carolyn McCormack, president, greeted the guests. The attendees then descended into the foyer of the Biltmore Bowl listening to the sounds of Sacred Heart's very own string quartet, comprised of Laura Dominguez '06, Cristina Nguyen '06, Eva Steinmetz '07 and Madeline Emanuel '07, as they enjoyed cocktails and hors d'oeuvres while bidding on an array of silent auction items.

St. Francis High School held its bi-annual POSH auction celebration last Saturday to raise money for the La Cañada school's building program. Event co-chairs Patty Szot and Barb Degnan were able to get the entire event underwritten, allowing 100 percent of the night's profits to go to the construction of a second story above the school's gymnasium. Guests wined and dined at the Frontrunner Dinner Club, bidding on over 600 silent auction items and an additional 50 items during the live auction.

The weekend's cold and wet weather caused a truck to roll over Monday morning and two cars to skid onto the shoulder of the freeway Sunday morning. The wintry weekend weather caused a truck to roll over on Angeles Forest Highway at about 9 a.m. Feb. 20. A 55-year-old Lancaster man driving a Mazda pickup truck hit some ice on a curveone mile south of Big Tujunga Canyon Road and his truck rolled. The man was transported by ambulance to Verdugo Hills Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.

Dec. 28 Theft: 734 Foothill Blvd., between 3:15 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Front right tire and wheel taken off of a Mazda while it was parked at Dish restaurant.

With this state leading the way in the fight against global warming, as the governor later pointed out, it was somehow fitting that a vehicle with a distinctly California name — the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid — was named the 2008 Green Car of the Year last week by Green Car Journal. The announcement was made Nov. 15 during media days leading up to the Los Angeles Auto Show, which opened to the public the following morning and runs through Sunday at the Convention Center in downtown L.A. Other vehicles considered for the honor were the Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid, Mazda Tribute Hybrid, Nissan Altima Hybrid and the Saturn Aura Hybrid.

AREA 1: 5100 block of Ocean View Boulevard: A man reported noticing a house that had its living-room window smashed. It appeared that someone had entered the house through the window and looked through cabinets and closets. No one is currently living at the location and it didn’t appear that anything had been stolen. The damage was assessed at $400. 4300 block of Raymond Avenue: A woman reported someone had smashed the rear passenger-side window of her vehicle between 12 and 7:30 p.m. on May 5. None of her belongings in the car were disturbed.
