Saturday's visit to Bakersfield was well worth the trip for the Palm Crest Chess Club. The seven students from the Chess Club made the long trip to Bakersfield to compete in the Youth Chess Charitable Foundation's Annual President's Day Chess Classic. More than 325 kids competed in the tournament. In the K-1 division, which had 47 competitors, Chiron Burl, a kindergartener playing in his second tournament, scored 4.5 points ? four wins and a draw ? to achieve a three-way tie for first place.

The La Cañada High School Winter Drumline recently competed in an international competition in Dayton, Ohio after participating in local competitions across Southern California. The group's six-minute show, "Materialism," combined musical pieces with a visual performance. The group earned a score of 90.125 in a preliminary performance, moving into the semi-finals. The Winter Drumline includes Eugene Kim, Andy Kim, Blake Lotter, Garret Culver, Spencer Wells, Kerry Moore, Noah Kim, Chris Derhartounian, Owen Gong, Manny Ramirez, Gavin Hyunh, Cory Tripathy, SoYoung Kwon, Ellie Kim, David Deans, Sean Haupt, Matthew Miller, Peter Choi, Bennett Lugosi and Arineh Matosian.

Eight members of the Palm Crest Chess Team competed in the Elementary State Championship Tournament this past weekend in Cost Mesa. With more than 260 participants, the competition was outstanding, according to the participants. Placing third in the K-3 Under 550 division was Orion Burl, who won six out of seven seven games. Also participating in the K-3 Under 550 division were Matthew Miller with 3 1/2 out of 7, Alyssa Miller with 2 1/2 out of 7, Titan Burl with 2 1/2 out of 7, Ethan Angold with 2 1/2 out of 7 and William Hayes with 2 out of 7. The K-3 team also placed second in their division with 14 1/2 points.

The LCHS Winter Drumline will give a free performance on campus next month. The show, "The Best Things in Life Are Free," will begin at 7 p.m. on April 12 in the north gym. Kiwanis Terrific Kids presented at PCR On May 13, the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada honored 12 Palm Crest Elementary School students at their weekly luncheon meeting. Future leaders at this meeting were Erin Salmi, Colin Suehiro, Monica Song, Jonathan Connelly, Sarah Sellman, Matthew Miller, Mary McHenry, Austin Willis, Jenny Lee, Ethan Angold, Lindsey Harris and Jonathan Stewart . Kiwanian Tom Slaughter introduced the Terrific Kids and their parents to the Kiwanis and guests.

One hundred and forty-eight young men were graduated on Saturday, May 23, 2009, on the campus of St. Francis High School in La Cañada. Rev. Matthew Elshoff, OFM Cap., the provincial of the Western American Province of the Capuchin Franciscan Order, represented Cardinal Roger Mahony, archbishop of Los Angeles, at the graduation. D. Allen Lund, chairman of the board of directors; Rev. Antonio Marti, OFM Cap., the school president; and Thomas Moran, the school principal, also officiated at the 60th commencement ceremony of the local Catholic, college-preparatory institution.
