The returning starters from last year?s CIF Southern Section Division IIA championship team were laughing and smiling at practice on Tuesday, the day before their match against Mater Dei in the annual Gahr Tournament to determine third place. Last year, the girls finished 10th at the Gahr Tournament. And for the cherry on top, the Spartans are ranked No. 1 again in Division IIA. ?I told the girls to enjoy it,? Coach Brock Turner said, ?but that the only rankings that matter are the ones at the end of the season.

La Cañada High's girls' volleyball team has a saying: "We don't collect trophies, we collect championships. " But the Spartans didn't return home from their first tournament of the season, the Molten Classic, with a championship. They did, however, earn a second-place trophy. "Our pieces are working out really well," La Cañada Coach Brock Turner said. "They're believing in themselves and the communication among everybody is really picking up. " The Molten Classic, hosted by Gahr High in Cerritos, was like a mini-CIF Southern Section playoffs, Turner said.

NORWALK — St. Francis High's James Knowles arrived at Cerritos College for Friday night's CIF Southern Section Track and Field Masters Meet brimming with great expectations. Knowles left the venue with mixed emotions after he didn't qualify for the CIF State Meet in Clovis. Knowles clocked 38.71 seconds to finish eighth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

There was no regret in Coach Tamar Hill?s voice when she said it. ?This was where we wanted to be,? Coach Hill said, ?this was the match up we wanted tonight, because we know them so well, but you can?t be mad at kids for playing hard and not winning.? Notre Dame and star forward Kody Burke took down La Cañada last Thursday, 47-38, in the quarterfinals of the CIF-SS Division V-AA playoffs ?We figured we had to hold them to under 40 [points],? said Notre Dame Coach, ?

For this doubles tennis tandem, getting accustomed to playing together was a challenge, but it turned out to be easier than getting accustomed to playing without each other. Prior to this season, Crescenta Valley High's Kisa Ito and Ashlee Chan had never played a match together, so an adjustment period was to be expected. Ito and Chan's play has earned them the honor of representing the Glendale News-Press, Burbank Leader and La Cañada Valley Sun as the All-Area Doubles Team of the Year.
