What do Ford, GM and La Cañada Flintridge City Council members have in common? They all want their “fair share” of the federal stimulus package. What does any of this have to do with Manny Ramirez? It’s in the subtext. True, the Dodgers offered Manny too much money in a down economy. True, Manny should have taken the deal. But in this season of trillion dollar bailouts, why can’t the La Cañada Flintridge City Council forgo the $1 million repaving of city streets and donate the money to the Los Angeles Dodgers?

The testimony in the what has become known as the "Dodger Divorce Trial" is stunning. Last week, it was revealed that Frank McCourt "had taken at least $100 million out of the Dodgers' assets for Jamie's use. " However thoughtful it was for Frank to blame this cash withdrawal on his estranged wife, the failure of the Dodger organization to invest in its bullpen is outrageous and inexcusable. The sum of $100 million would have allowed the Dodgers to keep Orlando Hudson, Juan Pierre and even Manny Ramirez.

The La Cañada High School Winter Drumline recently competed in an international competition in Dayton, Ohio after participating in local competitions across Southern California. The group's six-minute show, "Materialism," combined musical pieces with a visual performance. The group earned a score of 90.125 in a preliminary performance, moving into the semi-finals. The Winter Drumline includes Eugene Kim, Andy Kim, Blake Lotter, Garret Culver, Spencer Wells, Kerry Moore, Noah Kim, Chris Derhartounian, Owen Gong, Manny Ramirez, Gavin Hyunh, Cory Tripathy, SoYoung Kwon, Ellie Kim, David Deans, Sean Haupt, Matthew Miller, Peter Choi, Bennett Lugosi and Arineh Matosian.

The LCHS Winter Drumline will give a free performance on campus next month. The show, "The Best Things in Life Are Free," will begin at 7 p.m. on April 12 in the north gym.
