LCF Anime Club for teens 13 and up Attention, anime and manga otaku. For kids ages 13 and up, join the LCF Anime Club at the La Cañada Flintridge Library. Three St. Bede School students were recently honored with the student fo the month award. Ian Bogert, Monica Pernecky and Natalie Larsen were chosen for their outstanding Christian service to the community. They will be awarded with a certificate and a special lunch with the school’s principal.   La Cañada Flintridge Library, part of the County of Los Angeles Public Library, will be celebrating Children’s Book Week in November by conducting its 28th Annual Bookmark Contest with the support of Pentel of America, Ltd. This year’s theme is Rise Up Reading!

To kick off the Teen Summer Reading Program, we are having Max Espinoza's Cartoon/Manga Drawshop on Thursday, June 28, at 4 p.m. Max will present a free one hour class where young artists can learn the essentials of creating a Manga character of their own using the examples of animation styles of the past. The Teen Summer Reading Program will run from June 29 through August 15. Teens will read a book and fill out a raffle ticket with the title of the book to enter a raffle drawing every Friday for a gift card!

Color Theory and Manga? Check out Jim Gilbert's workshop at the La Cañada Flintridge Library on Saturday, July 28, at 2 p.m. Jim will talk about the proper use of colors, do some cartooning, and play with some dazzling facts. This program, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, is part of the Teen Summer Reading program which will run through Aug. 15. To participate in the program, teens will read a book, fill out a raffle with the title of the book, and enter a drawing every Friday for a gift card Join us at the La Cañada Flintridge Library, 4545 Oakwood Ave., in La Cañada Flintridge for an exciting Teen Summer Reading Program experience.

Everyone loves cartoons and they are everywhere in La Cañada Elementary School's third annual art museum exhibit. Colorful cartoons from the newspaper line the entry way before entering the individual grades' exhibits, depicting the students' group projects inspired by six artists who were influenced by cartoons. Different mediums were also used by the students, including paintings, drawings, collages and even Shrinky Dinks, as well as silk screening. "It is so gratifying to make art accessible to kids.

Dani Bowman sits down at the desk in the living room of her aunt and uncle’s La Cañada home. She opens up a drawing program on the computer and begins to create an outline of a character. Soon, she begins to add color, then eyes, then ears. She adds a body — a torso, arms and legs. She adds hair to the head; she colors in the rest of the character’s outfit. After polishing the character for a minute or two, she has created a new figure. And all in less than 10 minutes.
