Recent La Cañada High School graduate Jackson Ridd has a different career goal than most of his other college-bound classmates. He is hoping to turn his two-year hobby of performing magic tricks into a solid career. ?I?d really like to be able to make a living out of magic,? Ridd said. ?I definitely want to persue it as a career.? Ridd has an impressive foundation of magic tricks, skills and experience for only two years. After he first became interested, he learned about the nearby Magic Castle, an exclusive professional organization for career and hobby magicians.

Community members are invited to join LCF Tournament of Roses members for drinks, hors d'oeuvres and magic from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 30 at 5130 Castle Road, La Cañada. The special guest will be Gerald Schiller, a member of Magic Castle and the International Brotherhood of Magicians, who will amaze and confound with his unique performance. A man of many talents, he is also an author, teacher, and an award-winning documentary filmmaker. These monthly Happy Hours are informal and free, with a reasonable charge for drinks.

On Nov. 17, La Cañada Books & Toys brings a little history and magic to the community. Gerald Schiller, noted author and magician, will be signing True Stories of Old California from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at La Cañada Books & Toys. Schiller, a member of The Magic Castle, will also entertain with his special form of magic. Schiller has combined careers in a variety of fields. For almost 30 years he taught high school English and cinema studies, and, at the same time, wrote and directed educational and documentary films.

For the first time in the history of things "off the wall," illusionist Misty Lee and Real-live Cartoon Sylvester the Jester perform together at the Colony Theatre this Memorial Day Weekend. Shadows come to life. A tongue rolls out to five feet long, Get ready to be cut in two by a saw, and see sparks fly when this magical duo descend upon Burbank. A portion of all ticket sales will benefit Sante D'Or Animal Rescue, a foundation dedicated to giving animals in crisis a second chance in life.

The Academy of Magical Arts, Inc. at the Magic Castle announces that award-winning actress and Magic Castle member Tippi Hedren (star of Alfred Hitchcock films "The Birds" and "Marnie") and actor Steve Valentine ("Crossing Jordan"), will co-host a benefit and silent auction for The ROAR Foundation, supporting The Shambala Preserve, to be held at the Magic Castle. The evening includes dinner, a silent auction and shows at the Magic Castle. The Magic Castle will be open to the general public for this event.

The Pasadena POPS Orchestra - utilizing dancers, magicians and a dazzling light show to complement its own melodious musings - presents a musical portrait of classic children's tales in twin concerts July 15 and 16 at Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive in La Cañada. Featuring the vocals of international cabaret star Anna Bergman, "Fairy Tales Can Come True" explores the fantasy realm of enduring tales from everyone's childhood, bringing to life music from "Sleeping Beauty," "Cinderella," "Pinocchio," "Peter Pan," "The Wizard of Oz" and others.

Though the Station fire isn’t completely contained, La Cañada community members are showing their appreciation of all who have worked hard to battle it — including the two men who lost their lives. As of Wednesday, the Station fire was 62% contained with 160,000 acres burned. The Red Cross has vacated the La Cañada High gym, and all area residents have returned home. Today, the city of La Cañada Flintridge will host a community photo shoot at Memorial Park at 5:30 p.m. The resulting photo will be sent to the firefighters across the country who aided in the fight against the Station fire.

CLASSES Mommy & Me Art Class — Fridays, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., ages 3-5, with an adult. Session I, Sept. 18-Oct. 23; Session II, Oct. 30-Dec. 18 (No class Nov. 27, Dec. 11). Parents and toddlers will explore the wonder of creating original art in this hands-on class. With materials like finger paint, clay, tissue paper and wood, children and parents can stretch their imaginations and discover new artistic styles. Instructor is Lisa Narinian. Cost: $100 for each six-week session.
