Mary Lou Gottlieb of the LA Opera Speakers Bureau will present a talk on Porgy & Bess at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 16, at the LCF Library. Gershwin's emotionally powerful story of love lost and found centers on Porgy's attempt to rescue the promiscuous Bess from the clutches of her murderous lover Crown and the conniving drug dealer Sportin' Life. No other American work for the stage contains so many famous songs such as "Summertime" and "It Ain't Necessarily So." Locals are invited to attend the fascinating talk on an American classic at the La Canada Flintridge Library (County of Los Angeles Public Library)

The La Cañada Flintridge Library begins this year's season of opera talks with a presentation by Diane Beltoya from the La Opera Speakers Bureau on the "Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny" on Monday, Jan. 22, at 6:30 p.m. Mahagonny, an Old West boomtown, rises from the desert to become a razzle-dazzle mecca for lust, liberty and the pursuit of pleasure. Kurt Weill penned a haunting score, which crosses over from opera to cabaret to Broadway. The opera talks are sponsored by the Los Angeles Opera and the County of Los Angeles Public Library.

On Monday, March 12, at 6:30 p.m. Lyla Forlani, Production Stage Manager for the Los Angeles Opera, will speak at the La Canada Flintridge Library. Lyla Forlani marks this season as her eighth with the Los Angeles Opera. A classically trained musician, it was while studying bassoon at Indiana University's prestigious school of music that Lyla's love for opera was sparked. In this "Behind the Scenes" program, Lyla will talk about what it's like calling a show, prepping for a show and what she does during the show.

EVENTS — Friday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 p.m. Tanja Diezman and Tobias Gremmier, co-founders of the German graphic design company pReview Digital Design, will present various design applications — from mobile phone interfaces, TV and Web design to LED billboards and media events — in their presentation titled "Dynamic Design." The LAOPERA Education and Community Programs present with the County of Los Angeles Public Library an opera concert on Monday, June 25, at 6:30 p.m. at the La Cañada Flintridge Library. LAOPERA members Tammy Jenkins, Soprano, Daniel Montenegro, Tenor, and pianist, Paul Floyd will perform favorite opera and musical selections. Tammy Jenkins participated in San Francisco Opera Company's prestigious Merola program. In 1998 she made her professional debut with the San Francisco Opera Company as Frasquita in Bizet's Carmen.
