The new Los Angeles production of "Wicked" starts performances this Saturday night, Feb. 10 at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. The official opening night is Wednesday, Feb. 21. The producers are announcing that a day-of-performance lottery for a limited number of $25 front orchestra seats will be held daily. Each day, two and a half hours prior to show time, people who present themselves at the Pantages box office will have their names placed in a lottery drum, and then, thirty minutes later, names will be drawn for a limited number of front orchestra seats at $25 each, cash only.

The La Cañada Flintridge Community Center has announced that priority registration for the 2012-2013 school year was opened on Monday, Jan. 9, and will continue until Friday, Jan. 27. Priority registration is open to currently enrolled students, their siblings and siblings of students who attended the school from fall 2008 to spring 2011. The community center also announced that a random selection lottery will be held for all other interested families in early February. Children must be three years old by Dec. 2, 2012 and potty trained to qualify.

A woman has been arrested for allegedly committing numerous commercial burglaries including the Valero service station on Foothill Boulevard in La Crescenta. According to CV Sheriff Detective Rodger Burt, at around 5 a.m. on May 30 Jackie Arias allegedly smashed a window of the Valero service station and stole several items, including 800 lottery tickets. The state lottery has an agency that investigates stolen tickets. Burt contacted the agency and discovered that several of the tickets were redeemed at a store in Pasadena.

Out-of-district families hoping to get their students into La Cañada public schools can leave their sleeping bags, ear warmers and jugs of hot cocoa at home. The La Cañada Unified School District on Monday announced the introduction of a lottery system that will mean certain categories of permit students will no longer be given priority. As a result, families will not be camping out for a weekend in front of the district office to get to the top of the list, as has been the practice in recent years.

California continues to have politics as a growth industry, with millions of dollars being spent on both sides of the budget propositions to be decided by voters Tuesday. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Propositions 1A through 1F are a grab bag of measures to try to deal with the state?s ongoing failure to develop a budget strategy and funding plan. Polls show five of the six propositions losing. Whatever the final outcome is, the state faces at least an $8 billion deficit in the coming year.
