Nancy Harahan will be presented the Light of Learning Award for her outstanding contributions to the Los Angeles Public Library's programs and services on Thursday, May 17. Harahan is a founding member of The Council of the Library Foundation?a group of volunteers committed to benefiting the Los Angeles Public Library by facilitating special programs and fundraising events that increase public awareness of the programs and services of the Library. She served as president of The Council from 2000 to 2002 and has played a key role in the success of numerous Library Foundation projects.

Writer Norman Mailer, Library Foundation of Los Angeles Executive Director Evelyn Hoffman and Wells Fargo represented by Regional President Shelley Freeman, were honored at the 11th annual Los Angeles Public Library Awards Dinner on May 18, at the Central Library in downtown Los Angeles. Actor Keith Carradine hosted the gala event sponsored by the Library Foundation of Los Angeles, a nonprofit corporation dedicated to securing private contributions to support the Los Angeles Public Library.

Punch, cookies and tea will be served as local author Yana Ungermann-Marshall as she signs her new book of historical photos and anecdotes, "Images of America, La Cañada" on Thursday, June 29, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the La Cañada Flintridge Library. Yana, a longtime resident of La Cañada, is working on a master's in library science and is also an instructor at Glendale Community College. The La Cañada Flintridge Library, part of the County of Los Angeles Public Library, is located at 4545 Oakwood Ave., La Cañada Flintridge.

The La Cañada Flintridge Library begins this year's season of opera talks with a presentation by Diane Beltoya from the La Opera Speakers Bureau on the "Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny" on Monday, Jan. 22, at 6:30 p.m. Mahagonny, an Old West boomtown, rises from the desert to become a razzle-dazzle mecca for lust, liberty and the pursuit of pleasure. Kurt Weill penned a haunting score, which crosses over from opera to cabaret to Broadway. The opera talks are sponsored by the Los Angeles Opera and the County of Los Angeles Public Library.

Color Theory and Manga? Check out Jim Gilbert's workshop at the La Cañada Flintridge Library on Saturday, July 28, at 2 p.m. Jim will talk about the proper use of colors, do some cartooning, and play with some dazzling facts. This program, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, is part of the Teen Summer Reading program which will run through Aug. 15. To participate in the program, teens will read a book, fill out a raffle with the title of the book, and enter a drawing every Friday for a gift card Join us at the La Cañada Flintridge Library, 4545 Oakwood Ave., in La Cañada Flintridge for an exciting Teen Summer Reading Program experience.

The public is invited to attend the final two OneBook/OneCity events this year. On Tuesday, Oct. 24, from 7 to 9 p.m., there will be a screening of MGM's 1949 timeless movie classic, "Little Women," at the local branch of the County of Los Angeles Public Library. This Academy Award-winning film stars June Allyson, Peter Lawford, Margaret O'Brien, Elizabeth Taylor, Janet Leigh and Mary Astor, among others. The event is free to the public, but seating is limited, so be sure to get there early.

Journaling like Meg Cabot at library Join the La Cañada Flintridge Library from 4 to 5 p.m. Jan. 7 for fun journaling activities. Celebrate the release of the latest “Princess Diaries” book and have a chance to win an autographed copy of the new Meg Cabot book. For this special teen event, we will also have as a special guest, award winning teen book author Gloria D. Miklowitz. Miklowitz will give tips on journaling and writing. She has been writing stories since 1964 on issues regarding young adults.

Mark Totten, the head reference librarian and manager of the La Cañada Flintridge branch of the County of Los Angeles Public Library, mentioned in passing that the library's collection of Civil War books gets a lot of use during Civil War homework season. The teachers, it seems, want the students to cite real books, not just Wikipedia articles, for their Civil War references. So, local kids pour into the library searching for Civil War books. It hardly seems fair to deprive students of online resources.

For kids, there may no better motivator than candy. On Tuesday afternoon, as outside temperatures climbed into the 90s, two local libraries took advantage of that truism, beckoning youth to come inside for cool, candy-themed activities being held as part of a countywide summer reading program. At the La Cañada Flintridge Library, participants made candy sundaes with wrapped treats, curled ribbons and decorative straws, while the La Crescenta Library held a candy necklace-making activity with jelly beans, licorice bits and marshmallows standing in for gems, pendants and beads.

This year?s Fiesta Days celebration has been noted in the history books. To date we have celebrated 35 such events. As usual, it was a grand parade with cheering and flag waving. Each year, ?Little Town America? comes alive with the Fiesta Day?s Run, the community barbecue, a memorial service, French toast breakfast, a croquet tournament, the parade down Foothill Boulevard, and the first community concert of the summer season in the park. This issue of the Valley Sun will be filled with photos and stories about our city?

They?ve worked as a team for nearly a decade, but now as ?March Madness? hits the Los Angeles Library system, three familiar faces at the La Cañada Flintridge Public Library will be saying adieu to their home away from home. ?We?ve become an institution here,? said Sue Renyer, library manager. Renyer and two of her co-workers, Eric Goldberg, reference librarian, and Susan Hewitt, reference young adult librarian, will retire at the end of March after nearly 40 years of combined service to the Oakwood Avenue library.

The LAOPERA Education and Community Programs present with the County of Los Angeles Public Library an opera concert on Monday, June 25, at 6:30 p.m. at the La Cañada Flintridge Library. LAOPERA members Tammy Jenkins, Soprano, Daniel Montenegro, Tenor, and pianist, Paul Floyd will perform favorite opera and musical selections. Tammy Jenkins participated in San Francisco Opera Company's prestigious Merola program. In 1998 she made her professional debut with the San Francisco Opera Company as Frasquita in Bizet's Carmen.
