Leonora and Peter Wannier, owners of Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse, will break ground on construction of their new 6,400-square-foot building in the 1000 block of Foothill Boulevard at 9 a.m. Monday. Construction is targeted for completion in July 2010. The new bookstore will feature a clock tower above the building and a subterranean parking lot with an elevator. Employees are excited about the new project. “It’s going to be fabulous,” said Marketing Event Director Sandy Willardson.

Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 5-6, marks the 42nd annual Holiday Look In 42nd annual Holiday Look In home tour. This popular event has become an anticipated community celebration, offering visitors a chance to view four distinctive homes in the Pasadena area decorated for the holiday season. This year?s floral offerings are courtesy of Jacob Maarse and Tommy Farmer , both of Pasadena, Dolores Kroop of Padua in San Marino, and Leonora Moss in Sierra Madre. Homes on the tour include a pristine Georgian Colonial built in 1916, remodeled and creatively decorated to accommodate a growing family and two renowned artists; a 1926 English Tudor Revival residence on the bank of the Arroyo, updated to preserve its architectural and historic significance; a cluster of cottages and carriage stalls, originally constructed between 1906 and 1931 which is now the studio of artist Kenton Nelson; a 1916 Classic Mediterranean Revival villa shielded by towering hedges completed by gardens, patios, a pool and guest house.

For an exciting finale to this season's opera talks at the La Cañada Flintridge Library, the Los Angeles Opera and the County of Los Angeles Public Library are sponsoring a FREE concert on Monday, June 13 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tenor Robert MacNeil and-Soprano Julie Makerov accompanied by pianist Daniel Faltus, will sing opera favorites as well as selections from popular musicals. Tenor Robert MacNeil made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1998 in Britten's The World of the Spirit. This season, he returned to the San Diego Chamber Orchestra for Handel's Messiah and Orff's Carmina Burana as well as Verdi's Requiem with the Bozeman Symphony and Elijah with the Los Angeles Chorale.

It?s lauded by longtime La Cañada resident Margaret Pankratz as ?a major improvement? and ?something La Cañada has needed for a long time.? Pankratz was one of a few dozen people who showed up Monday morning for a ground breaking ceremony for the new Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse, set to be completed within the next 11 months, according to Steven R. Tiek, vice president of estimating for Illig Construction Company of Los Angeles. The 6,400-square-foot facility will be built on a 12,800 parcel of land at the corner of Foothill Boulevard and Chevy Chase Drive, on a lot that formerly housed a flower shop, Christmas tree lot and pumpkin patch near Angeles Crest Highway.

Whew! Tax time is over. Certainly not my favorite time of the year. Actually, I get quite cranky. Of course there is not a darn thing to be done about it. Ben Franklin once wrote in a letter, "Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes. " Amen, Ben. --- The best part of the last two weeks is that I learned a new word, luthier. A luthier is one who makes stringed instruments such as violin, viola, cello, guitar, harp and lute.
