Last year, the Italian-American parishioners of St. Bede the Venerable Church in La Cañada, at the urging of pastor Monsignor Jim Gehl, organized, planned and held an Italian festival tied to a healing Mass for members of the parish who were seeking special blessings for healing body and soul. The event last year was the first Italian feast ever held at St. Bede and was a huge hit with several hundred parishioners and friends attending the three Sunday Masses honoring St. Joseph, as well as the special anointing of the sick Mass.

Lynn Duvall Walking up the path to Janet Hamilton's La Cañada house, I wondered what year the home had been built. With a footprint appropriate to lot size, the architectural style of the Hamilton house complimented neighboring properties. The roof, window trim and paint appeared to be in perfect condition. I decided the timeless quality of the house was based on seamless, strong construction completed years ago, enhanced by meticulous maintenance, or what real estate agents refer to as "pride of ownership."

When walking into Gourmet a go go the first thing that strikes a customer is the delicious aroma coming from the freshly made entrees. This delightful, open-kitchen restaurant has exposed brick walls with high-beamed, original ceilings. There is also a private patio out back where diners could have a quiet lunch alone or reserve the whole patio and invite all their friends. Gail Connell, owner and chef, has been a caterer for more than 20 years, 10 of which have been in the area.

The end of the calendar year is traditionally a time of reflection when many La Cañadans gather together to take down the decorations, drink a gin fizz or two and bake lasagna for the float builders. In the spirit of year-end contemplation, the following is my annual top ten list of Southern California?s greatest places, in and around the 91011. 1 ) Shop at the Apple Cart. Nothing says La Cañada like The Apple Cart. The ladies are nice. There are complimentary cookies and seasonal hot beverages.

Water rate increase unfair to big families The Crescenta Valley Water District Board of Directors is holding a public forum Dec. 4 to discuss a water rate increase. As in the past, the staff will propose a tiered water rate structure, which will unfairly penalize households with families of more than four members and people with larger than average properties. At past forums, members of the CVWD Board have called customers who use more than the minimum baseline of water “water wasters.
