Sin City. The City of Lights. A gambler’s paradise. Las Vegas is many things for many people. But for the students in JK’s Dance Company, Las Vegas means only one thing: dance. About 70 dancers, ranging in age from 8 to 17, have been practicing 114 numbers, two days a week, for the past four months in anticipation of the Las Vegas Encore Performing Arts regional competition in June. The rehearsal room at Revolution Dance studio, owned by Julie Kay Stallcup, was packed Wednesday with students, each wearing the dance company’s red and black uniform, comprising a red JK’s Dance Company logo-emblazoned shirt with black tights.

Recently, Mark Dilbeck , president of Dilbeck Realtors GMAC Real Estate, joined members of Worldwide Employee Relocation Council (ERC) from around the country at the 2007 National Relocation Conference held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Dilbeck joined Fafie Moore, owner of Realty Executives of Nevada and Arthur Sterbcow, president of Latter & Blum, Inc., Realtors in New Orleans. The three panelists offered their insight into the state of the industry and the challenges and opportunities on the horizon.

Earlier this month, the US Soccer Club held its western regional competition in Las Vegas with three Flyers-AUSC Soccer Club teams dominating the competition. All three teams made it into the final rounds of their respective competitions, with two teams advancing and receiving invitations to the 2005 National Cup IV Finals (Region F-Premier) to be held in Orlando, Florida at the end of July. The Flyers-AUSC Boys Under 14 Team won the championship with a 3-1 victory over a strong Hawaii Bulls team.

Former La Cañadan Howard Crosby Vivian died Feb. 3, 2005. He was 79 years old. Most recently a resident of Las Vegas, the retired Jet Propulsion Laboratory engineer had called La Cañada home for 38 years. He was born Oct. 20, 1925 in Oakland. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy. He is survived by his wife, Jamalea C. Vivian of Las Vegas; son Douglas of Las Vegas; daughter and son-in-law Linda E.V. and Patrick Mc Donald of Mesa, Ariz.; and daughter Susan G. Vivian, also of Mesa.

Family and friends in La Cañada, as well as fans the world over, are mourning the loss of a comedy great this week. Singer, actor, impressionist, and beloved family man, Daniel “Danny” Davies Gans died in his sleep last Friday night in Las Vegas, where he and his family had moved from La Cañada, about 15 years ago. Gans was 52 years old. Gans grew up in Torrance, and graduated from Torrance High School in 1984. He and wife, Julie, later moved to La Cañada in order to live near both of their parents.

James E. "Jim" Barnes passed away May 11, at the age of 49 in La Cañada, his home for the past six years. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was a much loved father, husband and friend. Born in Riverside, Jim grew up in the Northridge area, spending his time with sports and the West Valley YMCA, where he met his future wife, Bonnie, and so many of his longtime friends. Jim graduate from UCLA with a bachelor's degree in economics and political science and obtained a juris doctor degree from Pepperdine University, where he served on the Pepperdine Law Review.

Guy Silliman recently married Michelle Little. The wedding ceremony took place at St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church in La Cañada Flintridge and the officiant was Monsignor James Gehl. A reception held at Annandale Golf Club in Pasadena included many out-of-town guests as well as friends and family of the honored couple. Michelle is the daughter of Ann Little of Anaheim Hills and Dennis Little of Las Vegas. She is a graduate of El Dorado High School in Placentia and University of Southern California.

Jennifer Le DeGrey and Ryan Clark Daileda were married Aug. 3 aboard the Marina Hornblower Yacht in Marina del Rey. The romantic sunset ceremony took place at sea on the yacht's open air top deck with a reception held immediately afterward on the lower levels. Festivities included dinner, dancing, cake smashing and even a light saber duel right out of Star Wars. More than 60 guests joined the beaming couple on board the three-deck yacht to celebrate their marriage. Close friends and family journeyed to Marina del Rey from Hawaii, Florida, Virginia, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada and Southern California.

Twenty Years Ago : Dianne Feinstein, then a candidate for the Democratic nomination in the California governor’s race, paid a visit to the JPL-Caltech Child Educational Center in La Cañada as part of a day-long sweep through Southland child care facilities.

Ann M. Johnson passed gently away, on Saturday, Aug. 29, after a heroic fight from a stoke that she suffered in April 2009. She was under hospice care at her daughter’s residence in Glendale, due to the fire evacuation of her home in La Cañada. Ann was born Nov. 14, 1923, in Santa Barbara. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Gene. She leaves behind her three children and their spouses: Gary and Jody Johnson of Henderson, Nev.; Patty and Rod Dryden of Glendale; and Randy and Sara Johnson of Charlotte, N.C. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren: Chris and Samantha Johnson of Penn Valley, Calif.

Annual golf tournament is Dec. 8 Golfers are urged to sign up to participate in the La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation’s ninth annual “Classroom Classic” golf tournament beginning at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 8 at La Cañada Flintridge Country Club. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by the spectacular Hole-In-One Shoot-Out for $1 million at 11 a.m., in which two players will be selected randomly for that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Tee-Off time is 11:30 a.m., and dinner will follow at the end of the tournament.

A dedicated team of seventh and eighth grade girls from La Cañada High School has been competing at the varsity level of high school lacrosse for the past season. Led by Head Coach Alison Dodson, the girls have proved their talent, boasting an amazing 9-0 undefeated season. The Spartans 7/8 girls' lacrosse team joined to play with the San Gabriel Valley Warriors lacrosse team to win the high school division of the Surf City Lacrosse Tournament at the beautiful Huntington Beach Sports Complex over Mother's Day weekend.

Ten Years Ago … 'Garden Impressions' was the theme of the 1997 Festival of Flowers at Descanso Gardens. Lectures, Easter egg hunts, plant sales and more were included in the March 22-April 13 event. Twenty Years Ago … A 42-year-old Vista Cañada Place man was arrested on charges of stealing $4.5 million from 36 individuals. The man allegedly told his clients, primarily physicians and dentists, he was setting up pension trust accounts, educational trusts and retirement plans for them.

American Mothers Inc. has chosen Dorothy Winder DeVore to represent La Cañada as the city's Mother of the Year. American Mothers is an interfaith, non-profit, non-political, organization that works as a dedicated force to strengthen the moral and spiritual foundations of the family and home. DeVore was chosen as California's Mother of the Year and will go on to compete for American Mother's National Title of Mother of the Year at a convention held in Las Vegas, Nevada in April.
