I like to think I’m pretty good in an emergency. I don’t faint at the sight of blood, I can watch vets do cut-downs into the neck veins of horses and dogs. I can pill a cat without fear. Loathing yes, but no fear. (If you could smell our cat’s breath you’d loathe the job too.) So I was embarrassed, even being alone, when a medium (OK, medium-small) spider ran over the back of my hand this morning as I was tapping away on my laptop and I squeaked loudly and flipped that hand toward the screen.

I was walking down Foothill Boulevard shortly after dawn with our dog, Miss Audrey Hepburn. As I walked, I wrestled with an important decision. My laptop is decrepit. I need a new laptop. What should I buy? My friends say the PC is dead. One says to buy a Mac. The other says to buy an iPad. I can’t decide. I walk Foothill Boulevard, ignoring my dog, checking my friends' texted messages on my phone. I feel guilty. This is supposed to be my quality time with my dog. I wonder if she notices that I’m not paying attention.

Doug Abajian of La Cañada Flintridge has lugged a video camera, laptop, microphone, speaker and many yards of cable halfway around the globe to Africa. This Sunday, he'll endeavor to link up with La Cañada Presbyterian Church and transport worshippers to Kenya via the Internet. Abajian and daughter Elizabeth, a recent graduate of La Cañada High, are among 22 people from the church who traveled to Nairobi on a missionary project. For the past two weeks, they have been teaching Vacation Bible School and doing light construction at the Shepherd's Home, which operates two homes for children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic that has swept through Africa in recent years.
