LA CAÑADA - It looked like whatever belief the La Cañada High boys' basketball team fans held after its team fell into an early deficit was going to be vindicated. Despite momentum swinging the way of the home-team Spartans in their CIF Southern Section Division III-AA opener, they still fell just short in a 49-48 loss to Lakeside Wednesday night. “It's just regroup for next year,” La Cañada Coach Tom Hofman said. “[Lakeside] made some big shots at the end, we answered a couple of them, but we just couldn't get that last batch.” It was a heartbreaking ending for La Cañada (15-13)

?We?re going into ?championship mode,?? said Greg Frederick, director of golf at Oakmont Country Club. ?That means heightening the grass cuts on the rough and the intermediate rough and begin double-cutting our fairways and rolling our greens.? This is just the start. Oakmont Country Club is preparing itself for the California Amateur Championship, which will be played at Oakmont and Lakeside (Toluca Lake) this week. It?s the first time the tournament has been played outside Northern California.

Robert "Bob" Middleton McKee, 76, of West Chester, Pa., died Sept. 29, 2004 after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was the loving husband of Sylvia Bomberger McKee and fantastic father to John Robert of Lakeside, Ariz.; Susan McKee Manser of Cherry Hill, N.J.; and David Middleton of Kirkland, Wash. His beloved grandkids are Emily, Anna, Kelsey, Gwyneth, Amber, Ian and Blake. Bob was a graduate of Haverford high School and Drexel University where he received a degree in chemical engineering.

The St. Francis varsity golf team defeated host North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, 199-203, in Mission League action on March 21 at Lakeside Country Club. The Golden Knights traveled to the Wilshire Country Club to play Los Angeles Loyola on Tuesday, but no results were available at press time. St. Francis will visit Oakmont Country Club next Monday to battle Crescenta Valley in a nonleague match at 2:45 p.m., will travel to Encino Crespi next Wednesday for a 2:30 p.m. league match and will travel to Porter Valley Golf Course to play Mission Hills Alemany in a 3 p.m. league match.

Visiting Los Angeles Loyola squeezed by the St. Francis varsity golf team, 197-198, in Mission League action on March 14 at Pasadena's Brookside Golf Course. The Golden Knights, who dropped to 3-3 overall, hosted Encino Crespi on Tuesday at Brookside and traveled to Lakeside Golf Course on Tuesday for league matches. Results were not available at press time. St. Francis will visit the Wilshire Country Club Golf Course next Tuesday for a 2:45 p.m. league match against Loyola.

Crestview Preparatory School parents, alumni and staff paid tribute to retiring Head of School Marge Hanna on March 10 at Lakeside Golf Club. The "Thanks for the Memories" benefit gala was held to thank Hanna for her dedication and leadership for 25 years. Hanna was honored by Parent Association President Tracy Thomas, former Board Chair Martha Brown, former student Leslie Wolfe, teacher Roseanne Ragus and current Board Chair Karen Bogaard. The evening proved to be a wonderful celebration of a well-respected educator.

The St. Francis varsity golf team scored a pleasing 188-203 victory over visiting Sherman Oaks Notre Dame on Monday at Pasadena's Brookside Golf Course in Mission League play. The Golden Knights improved to 4-7 overall and to 3-4 in league. They hosted Loyola in league yesterday (Wednesday) at the Wilshire Golf Course, but no results were available at press time. St. Francis will host West Hills Chaminade next Tuesday at Brookside and travel to Lakeside Golf Course to play Sherman Oaks Notre Dame next Tuesday in 2:30 p.m. league matches.

Although St. Francis boys' varsity golfer Mark Skeehan was the low medalist in a nonleague match against Crescenta Valley at the Brookside Course in Pasadena on March 17, it was the Falcons who won the contest. CV defeated the Golden Knights 198-204. St. Francis dropped to 4-2 and remained 4-0 in Mission League play. The Golden Knights played Harvard-Westlake on Monday and Alemany yesterday (Wednesday), both at Brookside, but no results were available at press time. The Golden Knights will travel to the Lakeside Course on Tuesday for a 2:30 p.m. match against Harvard-Westlake.
