La Cañada's 12U-Gold softball team extended its winning streak to 15 games in the Santa Ana Father's Day Blast tournament, before ultimately losing the championship game to hard-hitting Seaside of Oxnard. The final score was 6-3, and La Cañada took second place out of a 14-team pool. On their way to the championship, the Spartans defeated LaVerne, 8-3, Eastvale (Corona), 10-3, French Valley (Riverside), 12-0 and La Verne in a rematch 6-0. In an unfortunate bracket pairing, La Cañada 12U-Gold met La Cañada 12U-Cardinal and came out on top. The French Valley win was a perfect game, where no opponent runners reached base; Lauren Cox and Selina Mohr shared pitching honors.

La Cañada businessman Sonny Sardo will try for the third time this year to defeat Rep. David Dreier in the June 3 Republican primary for the 26th Congressional District, which includes La Cañada Flintridge. ?It?s not enough just to be a Republican,? Sardo said of the many term incumbent. He said his main issue with Dreier is on immigration, particularly with the congressman?s support of the Central America Free Trade Agreement, which he said has ?eroded our sovereignty and security.

For the first time this year, the La Cañada 14U Tournament Team did not lose in the championship game of a tournament. That?s because the team fell short of the championship game this weekend, losing to San Bernardino in the semifinals of the 16th Annual Diamond Bar All-Star Tournament. However, there were silver linings: La Cañada lost to San Bernardino, 7-2, but became the first team to score any runs off the Inland Empire powerhouse, which had outscored its opponents 24-0 in its three previous games.

They lived by their pitching and died by their offense. La Canada softball met their end against San Dimas, 2-1, on Tuesday at home in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division V playoffs. It went by so quickly as the game finished in about an hour and a half. ?It was a really good game, we fought really hard,? said senior Amanda Ulf, who has played for the Spartans every year since her freshman year. ?If you had told me we?d be here two years ago, I would have laughed.

BOYS' GOLF La Cañada in Rio Hondo League Individual Tournament: Seven of nine Spartans advanced to the second day of the Rio Hondo League tournament, which had 12 golfers move on, at the Marshall Canyon Golf Club in La Verne on Wednesday. Collin Morikawa owns a share of the lead, along with San Marino High's Charlie Allen, with a two-under-par 69. Morikawa, a sophomore, won the individual league title last year by eight strokes with a pair of three-under 68s. “This year, he's got some people breathing down his neck, so it should be interesting,” La Cañada Coach Richard Tetu said.

While the results may no longer be surprising, the La Cañada High boys' golf team is still enjoying the perks of a banner season. With one more league match still remaining, the Spartans already wrapped up a Rio Hondo League team championship after a 176-217 victory over host South Pasadena on Tuesday afternoon at par-36 Almansor Golf Course in Alhambra. The victory improved the Spartans' record to 15-1 overall this season and 7-0 in league. “This will be our ninth straight championship and it has a special meaning,” Spartans Coach Richard Tetu said.

McKay Anderson used to sit in La Cañada High gym as a child, watching his older brothers play basketball and imagining he, too, would play for the Spartans one day. However, the 16-year old heard boos when his name was announced Saturday in the lineup before tipoff of La Cañada's CIF State Division III Southern California Regional final championship game. That's because McKay, unlike his older brothers, was not playing for the Spartans but for La Verne Lutheran, the Spartans' oponent for the championship title.

It'd be a stretch to say La Cañada High boys' basketball coach Tom Hofman knew his team would be playing so late into the year. The Spartans are booked this weekend, though, as they'll be playing La Verne Lutheran in the regional finals of the CIF State Division III Southern California Regional tournament at USC's Galen Center at noon on Saturday. "We knew we would make a good run in CIF, but we knew the competition would be tough and didn't quite know what to expect in the playoffs," Hofman said.

Tom Hofman has seen a lot of things in his two-and-a-half decades coaching the La Cañada High boys’ basketball team, but he’s never seen anything like this. The Spartans kept their season alive in the CIF State Division III Southern California Regional playoffs last week, defeating Crespi, 43-42, in the second round on March 10. They also defeated Inglewood, 60-50, in the Southern California semifinals Saturday at home. Hofman gathered his team in the locker room after the game to tell them they’re in the middle of the greatest postseason run he’s ever seen, and everyone has had a hand in it. Hearing that is great, but there’s no time to sit back and reflect on that now, said La Cañada’s Mike McGlashan.
