Looking for a set of wheels that can surpass 250 mph? The 2006 Bugatti Veyron, being shown in North America for the first time at the LA Auto Show this week, is said to be one of the most powerful cars ever. This all-new vehicle boasts no fewer than 16 cylinders, 64 valves and four turbochargers, all of which combine to produce 987 horsepower. Of course the price tag -- a cool $1.2 million -- is a stretch for the average car buyer, but if you rationalize it properly, only 300 Veyrons will be built, so you could tell your accountant it is a true collectible that will only increase in value.

With this state leading the way in the fight against global warming, as the governor later pointed out, it was somehow fitting that a vehicle with a distinctly California name — the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid — was named the 2008 Green Car of the Year last week by Green Car Journal. The announcement was made Nov. 15 during media days leading up to the Los Angeles Auto Show, which opened to the public the following morning and runs through Sunday at the Convention Center in downtown L.A. Other vehicles considered for the honor were the Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid, Mazda Tribute Hybrid, Nissan Altima Hybrid and the Saturn Aura Hybrid.

Yesterday, while the chiefs of the big three automakers were in Washington, D.C., seeking support for a $25 billion loan package to keep their operations running, media jammed into the Los Angeles Convention Center to get a preview of the LA Auto Show. I couldn’t get downtown for the event as planned, so we’re relying here on a report from my husband, who goes every year to see what’s on the horizon in the auto industry. The company he works for manufactures superchargers and he likes to poke around under the hoods of the new offerings to see if they might be good candidates for a power boost.
