Although a hopeful for the position himself, state Assemblyman Anthony Portantino this week applauded the naming of Karen Bass to replace Fabian Nuñez as Assembly speaker when Nuñez is ready to step down, likely in late August. “Karen Bass is an outstanding choice for speaker and I look forward to working with her very closely,” Portantino told the Valley Sun in an interview this week. Portantino was one of seven male Assembly members who had sought the leadership post.

The man from La Cañada has declared his candidacy for one of the most powerful positions in the state, that of speaker of the Assembly. “I look on the job as a way to pursue my campaign issues,” Assemblyman Anthony Portantino told the Valley Sun. “I want to work for budget reform, education and health care.” The opportunity is opening up because of the defeat of the term limits revision on last week’s ballot. Speaker Fabian Nuñez will be leaving the Legislature at the end of the current term.

If the state Legislature were a high school cafeteria, you wouldn’t find Assemblyman Anthony Portantino (D- La Cañada Flintridge) sitting with the popular kids. But that’s just fine by him. During his five years in Sacramento, Portantino — now fundraising for a congressional bid in 2012 — has clashed with the Assembly’s Democratic leadership on a number of occasions. When many Democrats cried foul over legislative pay cuts ordered by former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Portantino argued lawmakers should also give up their state-provided cars.

Walk raises more than awareness Music legend/producer/songwriter and advocate Kashif’s 5K Walk for Foster Care , held Saturday, July 26, at the Rose Bowl proved a huge success for the foster care initiative. Over 1,500 walkers/runners participated in the event. Kashif was honored with numerous awards, proclamations and resolutions from California Assembly Speaker Karen Bass , Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich , California Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas , California Assemblymember Anthony Portantino and Pasadena councilman Chris Holden for his work as an advocate for foster care.

State Assemblyman Anthony Portantino told the Valley Sun he is very happy to have been reinstated as chairman of the Assembly Higher Education Committee. ?I think [Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez] did the right thing in reinstating me,? the La Cañada Democrat said. ?I?m glad to be back working on the issues I care about, safeguarding the education of California students.? Portantino was reinstated in the post Friday, after a two-week hiatus. Nuñez had no comment on the move, just as he had declined to comment on his reasons to remove Portantino from the post in March.

Assemblyman Anthony Portantino of La Cañada Flintridge told the Valley Sun this week he was disappointed to be removed last Thursday as chairman of the Assembly higher education committee by Speaker Fabian Nuñez. ?I was given no reason why, just an e-mail from the clerk?s office,? Portantino’s war chest building Assemblyman Anthony Portantino (D-La Cañada), now in the middle of a campaign for re-election, has been very successful in fundraising, according to state records. His re-election committee has raised $234,641 since the first of the year, and has spent $217, 119, leaving a healthy bank account of $428,478. A separate officer holder account controlled by Portantino and known as Moving Forward California has raised $30,000 since March.

State Assemblyman Anthony Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge) has named Pat Anderson, chief executive officer of the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce, as the 44th Assembly District Woman of the Year. Anderson has emerged in recent years as a champion of La Cañada businesses, attending City Council and committee meetings to speak on the behalf of business owners. She has also spearheaded several chamber events, including the installation dinner, the annual Festival of Lights Christmas celebration and monthly mixers.
